Sweden (SE)
Sweden is a constitutional monarchy and parliamentary democracy in Scandinavia, the largest Nordic country by area, renowned for its breathtaking archipelago and lake-dotted landscapes, groundbreaking design and innovation culture (IKEA, Spotify, Volvo, H&M), one of the world's most generous welfare states with 480 days of paid parental leave per child, world-leading gender equality, and a deeply held philosophy of lagom — the art of balance and moderation — that permeates every aspect of Swedish society.
Family Rights & Benefits
Maternity, parental leave and child benefits in Sweden.
Sweden has one of the most comprehensive family support systems in the world. The cornerstone is föräldraförsäkringen (parental insurance) — 480 days of parental leave per child, paid at approximately 80% of salary. Both parents are entitled to take leave, with 90 days each designated exclusively for the respective parent (pappamånader / pappadagar). Free childcare (förskola with maxtaxa), barnbidrag (child benefit), and free healthcare for under-18 are additional pillars. Sweden consistently ranks #1 globally for gender equality, and its parental leave system is designed to encourage shared parenting.
Graviditetspenning + Föräldrapenning (Pregnancy benefit + Parental benefit)
Before birth: Graviditetspenning (pregnancy benefit): available 60 days before the due date if the work is physically demanding and cannot be modified. Up to 10 days of dagar before birth counted under föräldrapenning. Also: gravid and the right to lighter duties during pregnancy.
After birth: From the day of birth: one parent begins föräldrapenning. Both parents can take föräldrapenning simultaneously for the first 10 days after birth (tio pappamånader / dad days at birth). The full 480 days is then available to be divided.
Job protection: Full employment protection during parental leave under Föräldraledighetslagen (Parental Leave Act). Employer cannot dismiss or disadvantage an employee for taking or intending to take parental leave. Right to return to the same or equivalent position. Right to part-time (25%, 50%, 75%) parental leave until the child is 12.
Föräldrapenning (Parental Benefit)
Max duration: 480 days per child total — 240 days per parent. The leave can be used flexibly: as full days, half days, or 1/8 days. Leave can be taken at any time until the child turns 12 (or up to 16 in some cases). Parents can split the 480 days as they choose, except that 90 days are earmarked for each parent (cannot be transferred).
Split rules / Elterngeld: 90 days are reserved for each parent (pappamånader) — these cannot be transferred to the other parent. The remaining 300 days can be split freely. Both parents can take leave simultaneously. Single parents receive all 480 days. The benefit amount: SEK 1,250/day at full rate (2026) for the first 390 days; SEK 180/day (lägstanivådagar) for the final 90 days. Max: 80% of qualifying income up to the SGI ceiling.

Flerbarnstillägg (multi-child supplement) for families with 3 or more children: additional SEK 150–740/month from child 3 onwards (2026 rates). Child benefit for 16–20 year olds in school is paid as "studiebidrag" via CSN instead.
