Rabies vaccination — required for ALL pets entering Sweden from non-rabies-free countries. Must be administered after microchipping. Timing: for dogs and cats arriving from most countries outside Scandinavia/EU, a titer test (rabies antibody test) may be required 30 days after vaccination For dogs arriving from outside EU: echinococcus (tapeworm) treatment by a veterinarian 1–5 days before entry into Sweden Core vaccinations (distemper, parvovirus, hepatitis for dogs; cat flu and enteritis for cats) strongly recommended but not legally required for entry

Sweden does not have a national breed ban, but some municipalities have local restrictions on certain breeds considered dangerous.

🐕 Dog Tax / Registration

No national dog tax in Sweden. Some municipalities charge a registration fee for dogs — check with your local kommun.

Register with a Swedish veterinarian (veterinär) after arrival. Sweden has a strong culture of pet insurance (djurförsäkring) — Agria, Folksam, and If offer comprehensive pet insurance. Sweden's veterinary care is excellent but can be expensive — insurance strongly recommended.

📋 Relocation Process

1. Microchip your pet (ISO standard 15-digit). 2. Vaccinate against rabies after microchipping. 3. For dogs coming from outside EU: schedule echinococcus treatment 1–5 days before travel. 4. Obtain an EU Pet Passport (from EU) or official health certificate (from non-EU). For non-EU pets: use TRACES system (IMSOC) — your vet in the origin country creates an electronic health certificate. 5. Enter Sweden through an approved border inspection post (BIP). 6. Register your pet with a Swedish veterinarian. 7. Report your arrival to Jordbruksverket (Swedish Board of Agriculture) if required.

Sweden applies EU regulations for pets from EU countries (EU Pet Passport system). For pets from non-EU countries, Sweden applies third-country import rules — some countries are listed as approved (Australia, New Zealand, UK, USA, Japan, Canada) with simplified procedures. Other countries may require additional documentation or titer tests. Check Jordbruksverket (jordbruksverket.se) for the most current approved country list. Dogs must be kept on a leash in public spaces unless in a designated off-leash area (hundrastgård). Dogs are generally welcome in Swedish national parks under allemansrätten rules but must be kept on a leash between 1 March and 20 August (breeding/nesting season).
