BankID
BankID is Sweden's de facto national digital identity system — a bank-issued digital certificate used to authenticate your identity online and sign documents electronically. It is the single most important digital tool in Sweden. Without BankID you cannot: file your tax return, access healthcare records, open a bank account online, use Swish, authenticate with government agencies, sign rental contracts, or apply for benefits. There is no government-issued digital ID separate from BankID in Sweden (unlike DigiD in Netherlands or MitID in Denmark). Freja eID is an alternative (see below) but BankID is dominant.
How to get it: Obtain BankID from a Swedish bank after opening an account. You need: (1) a personnummer, (2) a Swedish bank account, (3) a visit to the bank branch with your passport/ID. The bank verifies your identity in person, then activates BankID on your phone. Mobile BankID (on smartphone) is the standard form. Process: visit bank → verify identity → download BankID app → activate via bank.
E-Government Portal
https://www.myndighetsguiden.seMost Swedish e-government services require BankID to authenticate. A few accept Freja eID+ as alternative. Services are generally excellent — Sweden is consistently ranked top 5 in Europe for e-government. Available in Swedish and increasingly in English.

BankID
FreeSweden's digital identity and electronic signature. Absolutely essential — used for almost all online authentication in Sweden. Must have before using any Swedish digital service.
Swish
FreeUniversal Swedish mobile payment app. Enables instant transfers between Swedish bank accounts using only a phone number. Used at markets, splitting bills, paying small businesses, and peer-to-peer. Requires BankID and Swedish bank account.
1177 Vårdguiden
FreeOfficial Swedish healthcare app. Book GP appointments, read test results, renew prescriptions, chat with nurses, and access your medical journal. Call 1177 for medical advice (free 24/7). Requires BankID for full access.
Min Försäkring (Försäkringskassan)
FreeManage all your Swedish social insurance — parental leave (VAB, föräldrapenning), sick leave reports, dental subsidy, and more. Essential for families and anyone using Swedish social insurance.
Skatteverket
FreeSwedish tax authority app. Approve your deklaration (tax return) with a single click or SMS in most cases. Check tax account, tax deductions, and employer declarations.
SL-appen (or Reskassa)
FreeStockholm public transport app for T-bana, bus, and commuter train. Buy tickets, manage monthly passes, and plan journeys.
Klarna
FreeSwedish fintech giant — buy-now-pay-later for online shopping. Very widely integrated in Swedish e-commerce. Also offers a basic bank account.
Freja eID
FreeAlternative to BankID offered by Verisec. Can be activated earlier than BankID (via Swedish passport/ID verification). Accepted at some government services and growing list of businesses.

FreeSweden's dominant property portal — for buying (bostadsrätt, villa) and some rentals. Used by virtually all Swedish estate agents.

FreeSweden's largest classifieds marketplace. Buy and sell secondhand furniture, electronics, clothing, and more. Also has job listings and housing.
ICA-appen / Coop
FreeSwedish supermarket apps with digital loyalty cards (ICA-kortet, Coop-kortet), weekly offers, and online shopping.
Apoteket
FreePharmacy app to manage prescriptions (e-recept), order refills, and find nearest open pharmacy.
BankID is so central to Swedish digital life that it is nicknamed "the digital passepartout." The system is operated by a consortium of Swedish banks and is legally recognised for electronic signatures under the EU eIDAS regulation. Important: BankID is tied to your Swedish phone number and bank account — if you change banks or phone numbers, you must re-activate BankID. Mobile BankID (on smartphone) replaced card readers and old-format BankID in most use cases. Freja eID+ is a growing alternative that can be obtained from some municipalities and post offices with photo ID, without needing to visit a bank first.
