Swedish Public Employment Service

Arbetsförmedlingen

Register online at arbetsformedlingen.se or at a local Arbetsförmedlingen office. You need a personnummer to register. Registration is required to receive A-kassa (unemployment insurance) and to access the full range of services. Registration also activates your obligation to actively seek work.

Expat eligibility: EU/EEA citizens with personnummer have full access to Arbetsförmedlingen services and A-kassa after meeting contribution requirements. Non-EU citizens with a valid work permit (arbetstillstånd) also qualify. Newly arrived refugees and certain permit holders may enter the Etableringsprogrammet (Establishment Programme) — an intensive 24-month integration and employment programme.

💼 Work Permits

EU Citizens

EU/EEA/Swiss citizens have the right to live and work in Sweden without a work permit. They must register at Migrationsverket if staying more than 3 months. Folkbokföring (population registration) at Skatteverket for personnummer is the main practical step.

Non-EU Citizens

Non-EU nationals require a work permit (arbetstillstånd) before arriving in Sweden for employment. The permit must be applied for by the employer — employers must advertise the position in the EU/EEA for 10 days before applying for a non-EU permit (unless exempt). The process takes 2–8 months. The permit is employer-specific initially, but can become more open after 4 years.

EU Blue Card

Sweden participates in the EU Blue Card scheme. Eligible for highly educated non-EU workers with a salary of at least SEK 52,000/month gross (set July 9, 2025, at 1.25x average gross salary; valid into 2026). A 12-month employment contract is required. Blue Cards now valid up to 4 years (from June 2026, extended from 2 years). Offers a faster path to permanent residence.

Freelancer Visa

There is no specific self-employment/freelancer visa in Sweden. Non-EU nationals wishing to be self-employed in Sweden must either have a permanent residence permit (permanentuppehållstillstånd) or apply for a special permit. The process is handled by Migrationsverket. EU citizens can register a Swedish sole trader (enskild firma) without any permit.

⏱️ Work Culture

Typical hours Standard working week: 40 hours (8 hours/day), often 08:00–17:00 with a 30–60 min lunch (fika included). Many Swedes work flextime (flextid). Part-time work is common, especially among parents of young children.

Annual leave Minimum 25 days paid annual leave (semester) by law (Semesterlagen) — one of the highest in the world. Many collective agreements grant 28–30 days. All employees are entitled to take a consecutive 4-week summer holiday (sommarsemester), typically in July.

Sick leave Karensdag (first sick day is unpaid — a self-deduction equivalent to ~20% of daily wage). From day 2–14: employer pays 80% of salary. From day 15+: Försäkringskassan pays sjukpenning (sickness benefit, ~80% of salary). A doctor's note (läkarintyg) is required from day 8 of sick leave.

Trial period Provanställning (probationary employment): maximum 6 months. Either party can terminate during this period without stating a reason, with 2 weeks notice.

Notice period Under LAS (Lagen om Anställningsskydd): minimum 1 month for employees with <2 years service; 2 months for 2–4 years; 3 months for 4–6 years; 4 months for 6–8 years; 5 months for 8–10 years; 6 months for 10+ years. Many collective agreements are more generous.

Salary range Entry-level professional: SEK 28,000–38,000/month. Mid-level: SEK 38,000–55,000/month. Senior/specialist: SEK 55,000–80,000/month. Tech leads and experienced specialists: SEK 80,000–110,000+/month. Salaries are in gross figures — marginalskatt (marginal tax) means net take-home is significantly lower.

Pay frequency Monthly. Typically paid on the 25th of each month (lönedag). Payslip (lönespecifikation) provided with each payment.
