Eligibility
Non-EU/EEA nationals who have held a Swedish time-limited residence permit and have been lawfully residing in Sweden. Work permit holders: 4 years. Other categories (family reunification, etc.): typically 5 years.

EU/EEA citizens acquire permanent right of residence (permanent uppehållsrätt) after 5 years of continuous lawful residence in Sweden. They do not need a formal permit card but can request a registration document. Permanent residence gives access to many more benefits including social assistance and most employment rights equivalent to Swedish citizens.

- ✓EFFECTIVE 6 JUNE 2026 — new rules apply to all undecided applications after that date:
- ✓8 years of lawful residence (hemvisttid) — standard route (up from 5 years)
- ✓OR 7 years: spouses/cohabiting partners of Swedish citizens (relationship AND partner's Swedish citizenship must each have lasted at least 5 years)
- ✓OR 5 years: stateless persons, refugees
- ✓OR 2 years: Nordic citizens (Danish, Norwegian, Finnish, Icelandic) and former Swedish citizens
- ✓Permanent residence permit (permanentuppehållstillstånd) or equivalent EU permanent right of residence
- ✓Income/self-sufficiency: must be able to support yourself — minimum approximately SEK 20,000/month before tax (3 income base amounts/year)
- ✓No serious criminal record or outstanding debts to the state
- ✓Ability to demonstrate identity (klarlagd identitet)
- ✓Civics knowledge test: mandatory from August 2026
- ✓Swedish language test: planned from October 2027 at earliest (not yet in force for 2026 applications)
- ✓Children can no longer be included in parent's application (from 6 June 2026) — must apply separately

CRITICAL: Sweden's Parliament passed a new Citizenship Act taking effect 6 June 2026, representing the most significant tightening in decades. The standard residence requirement rose from 5 to 8 years; the spousal route rose from 2 to 7 years (with a 5-year relationship requirement). A civics society test starts August 2026; a formal Swedish language test is planned for October 2027 at earliest — until then, language can be evidenced through SFI, school certificates, or university language tests. The income floor of ~SEK 20,000/month is new. These rules apply to ALL undecided applications on or after 6 June 2026, including those submitted before that date.

Citizenship by Birth
Eligibility
Born to a Swedish citizen father or mother (regardless of where born). Also applies if born in Sweden to a stateless person. Automatic.

Children born in Sweden to foreign parents do not automatically receive Swedish citizenship (jus soli does not apply in Sweden). If both parents are non-Swedish, the child takes the parents' nationality and must later apply for Swedish citizenship.
Citizenship by Nordic Agreement
Eligibility
Citizens of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, or Norway may naturalise in Sweden after only 2 years of lawful residence — unchanged by the June 2026 reform.
