Leaving Indonesia
How to properly exit — protecting your finances, rights and records.
📅 General Timeline
12 weeks before departure: Give notice to employer (check contract); begin KITAS cancellation planning. 8 weeks: Give notice to landlord; begin searching for moving services. 6 weeks: Cancel school enrolments and give formal notice to international school. 4 weeks: File final tax return (or ensure current-year obligation is handled); initiate BPJS JHT withdrawal process; notify bank. 2 weeks: Cancel utilities; close or plan bank accounts; return e-toll card; sell or dispose of vehicle (STNK transfer required). 1 week: Conduct rental handover; collect deposit. Final week: Surrender KITAS at immigration office; receive cancellation stamp; depart. After departure: Monitor BPJS JHT payout; ensure NPWP deregistered if needed; maintain email access for any DJP correspondence.
Deregistration
KITAS holders must formally surrender their KITAS to the local Kantor Imigrasi (Immigration Office) before final departure. Submit: passport, original KITAS card, and departure ticket. Receive KITAS cancellation stamp. Failure to cancel KITAS properly can complicate future visa applications. KITAP holders similarly surrender the card. Report departure to your local RT/RW (neighbourhood chief) as a courtesy. Notify employer to initiate IMTA cancellation with Kemnaker — required to release employer from work permit obligations.
Tax clearance
File final SPT Tahunan (annual tax return) for the portion of the year you were resident. Obtain NPWP deregistration certificate from DJP Pratama if you will not return to Indonesia. For KITAS holders with employer-withheld PPh 21: employer issues Bukti Potong (tax withholding certificate) — use this for final return. Any outstanding tax must be paid before departure. DJP has increased monitoring of departing KITAS holders via the AEOI data exchange system. Tax clearance letter not formally required but obtaining one reduces future complications.
Pension portability
BPJS Ketenagakerjaan JHT (old age savings): fully withdrawable as lump sum upon permanent departure from Indonesia. Submit: passport, KITAS cancellation proof, bank account details, and application form to BPJS Ketenagakerjaan office. Processing: 5–10 business days, paid by bank transfer. BPJS Ketenagakerjaan JP (Jaminan Pensiun): if you have contributed for less than 15 years and are departing, you can claim a lump sum after 10 years from the last contribution date. JKK and JKM benefits terminate on last employment day. International pension portability: Indonesia has totalization agreements with limited countries — check if your home country has a social security agreement.
Health insurance
BPJS Kesehatan membership terminates automatically when KITAS is cancelled. You can also proactively deactivate by submitting cancellation at BPJS Kesehatan office. Any outstanding monthly premiums must be settled before cancellation — arrears block deactivation. Private international health insurance: review policy for "home country" coverage — most international policies terminate on return to home country or on leaving Indonesia. Cancel policy before billing cycle to avoid unnecessary charges.
Bank account
Indonesian bank accounts can remain open after departure for up to 6–12 months depending on the bank (varies by institution and account type). Close accounts or designate a trusted power of attorney to manage remaining funds. BCA: visit branch to close. Jenius: close via app. Transfer remaining funds via Wise, Swift international transfer, or Instarem before closure. Note: closing large Indonesian bank accounts may require documentation explaining funds source. Inactive accounts after 6 months may incur monthly fees. Maintain one account if planning to return.
Utilities
Cancel PLN electricity: visit PLN office or call 123 (PLN customer service) 30 days before departure — request final meter reading and return deposit if applicable (prepaid meters: no deposit). Cancel PDAM water: visit local PDAM office with account number and ID. Cancel IndiHome/MyRepublic/Biznet internet: 30-day notice usually required. Cancel mobile data plans: deactivate SIM or move to pay-per-use. Cancel LPG subscription if any. Cancel any streaming services (Netflix, Spotify Indonesia) — these continue billing until cancelled.
Rental contract
Review rental agreement notice period — typically 30–90 days written notice required. Many Jakarta and Bali rental agreements are annual or multi-annual — breaking early may forfeit 1–3 months deposit. Conduct final inspection with landlord and document condition in writing. Agree on deposit return timeline (typically 2–4 weeks after vacating). Property must be returned in the same condition as received minus normal wear and tear. If landlord withholds deposit unfairly, formal dispute can be filed via Dinas Perumahan or civil court — though pursuing this from abroad is difficult.
