Digital ID, e-government and essential apps in Portugal.

Chave Móvel Digital (CMD)

Portugal's national digital authentication system, equivalent to Germany's ELSTER or Spain's Cl@ve Permanente. CMD allows authentication to all Portuguese government portals with a mobile phone number + PIN. The Cartão de Cidadão (biometric ID card) chip also provides a qualified electronic signature (Assinatura Digital). CMD is free and available to all NIF-holding residents and Portuguese citizens worldwide.

How to get it: Register at autenticacao.gov.pt or at any Loja do Cidadão (Citizen's Shop), IRN office, or Portuguese consulate. You need your NIF + mobile phone number + valid identification. The activation code is sent by SMS and post. Foreign residents can register once they have a Portuguese NIF. The CMD app (Autenticação.gov) is available for iOS and Android.

ePortugal.gov.pt is the unified government portal launched in 2019. Most services require Chave Móvel Digital authentication. The portal is in Portuguese only; Chrome auto-translate works well for basic navigation. AIMA portal (aima.gov.pt) is separate and specifically for immigration matters.
