✈️ Visa-Free Access
EU/EEA/Swiss citizens do not need a visa and have the right to live and work in Portugal. Citizens of Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, UK, USA, and ~60 other countries can enter visa-free for 90 days within any 180-day Schengen period. Many Latin American citizens (Brazil, Argentina, etc.) also enter visa-free for 90 days but need a residence visa for longer stays. Non-EU nationals from visa-required countries must obtain a Schengen visa or Portuguese national visa for longer stays.
All non-EU long-stay visas are applied for at a Portuguese consulate in your country of residence. After arrival on a national visa, you must schedule an AIMA (Agência para a Integração, Migrações e Asilo) appointment for the Autorização de Residência within the visa validity period. AIMA was established in 2023 replacing the former SEF (Serviço de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras) — processing times are significantly impacted by reorganisation backlogs (expect 6–18 months from application to permit). An Agendamento (appointment) can be booked at aima.gov.pt. EU/EEA/Swiss citizens register at the Câmara Municipal or AIMA within 3 months of arrival for a Certificado de Registo. All residence applicants must have a NIF — obtain one at any AT office or at the Portuguese consulate before arriving.
D7 — Passive Income / Retirement Visa
Non-EU nationals with regular passive income: pensions, rental income, dividends, savings interest. Popular with retirees and those living off investments. No work allowed (though remote work for non-Portuguese employers is tolerated in practice).
2–4 months at Portuguese consulate
- ✓Proof of passive income ≥€920/month (Portuguese minimum wage, 2026) for main applicant + 50% per additional family member
- ✓Valid passport
- ✓Criminal record certificate from all countries of residence last 5 years (apostilled + translated)
- ✓Private health insurance with full Portugal coverage
- ✓Proof of accommodation in Portugal (rental contract or property deed)
- ✓Declaration that income is sufficient without working
- ✓NIF from a Portuguese consulate or AT office
D8 — Digital Nomad / Remote Worker Visa
Non-EU nationals working remotely for foreign employers or as freelancers for non-Portuguese clients. Income must be primarily from non-Portuguese sources.
2–4 months at Portuguese consulate
- ✓Proof of remote employment or freelance contracts (employment letter, service agreements)
- ✓Minimum gross income ≥€3,680/month (4× Portuguese minimum wage of €920/month, 2026) for main applicant
- ✓Proof that work is predominantly for non-Portuguese clients/employers

- ✓Evidence of viable business concept or existing client contracts
- ✓Financial means (€760/month per adult 2026 during permit period)

D3 — Highly Qualified Activity Visa
Non-EU workers with a Portuguese employer or service contract for highly qualified roles — scientists, researchers, senior management, IT specialists, engineers. Also used for work authorised under EU Blue Card.

Non-EU investors. Real estate investment category removed in October 2023 (following Mais Habitação housing reform). Remaining pathways: capital transfer (€500k+ to Portuguese fund or company), job creation (10+ jobs in Portugal), investment in arts/cultural heritage (€250k+), scientific research (€500k+), or venture capital fund investment (€500k+).
