Open an Isle of Man bank account

You need a local bank account to receive your Isle of Man salary, pay rent, and set up standing orders. Several UK banks operate Isle of Man branches or subsidiaries. Isle of Man Bank (a Royal Bank of Scotland subsidiary), Lloyds Bank International, and HSBC have island-based operations. Note: Isle of Man banking entities are separate from their UK equivalents and covered by the IoM Depositors Compensation Scheme (up to £50,000).

Enrol children in school

Education on the Isle of Man is managed by the Department of Education, Sport and Culture. State schools are free and broadly similar to the UK system. The island has no grammar schools but has a strong network of primary and secondary schools. School places are allocated by the DESC based on catchment area.

Register with a Manx Care GP practice

Manx Care is the Isle of Man's NHS-equivalent public health service. Healthcare is free at the point of use for all residents. Register with a GP (General Practitioner) practice in your area as soon as you arrive. This gives you access to primary care, referrals to Noble's Hospital, and prescriptions.

Set up electricity and water with Manx Utilities

Manx Utilities is the sole supplier of electricity, water and wastewater services on the Isle of Man — there is no competing provider to choose between, unlike the UK's deregulated energy market. From 1 April 2026, the standard domestic electricity rate is 29.5p/kWh with a 25.5p/day standing charge (a 1.5% increase on the previous year), and water/wastewater charges rose 2.9% in line with inflation. Water and electricity are billed separately but can sit on the same Manx Utilities account.

Apply for an Isle of Man work permit (non-EEA/British)

Non-British, non-Irish, and non-EEA nationals require a work permit issued by the Isle of Man Cabinet Office to work on the island. The Isle of Man operates its own immigration and work permit system, separate from the UK's. Your employer typically applies on your behalf. British and Irish nationals have the right to work freely.

Apply for an Isle of Man National Insurance number

The Isle of Man has its own National Insurance system, separate from the UK's. You need an Isle of Man National Insurance (NI) number to work, pay NI contributions, and access social security benefits on the island. Apply to the Isle of Man DHSS. Note: your UK NI number (if you have one) is NOT automatically valid for Isle of Man employment purposes.

Register with the Isle of Man Income Tax Division

The Isle of Man has its own income tax system with a top rate of 20% and a generous personal allowance. Register with the Isle of Man Income Tax Division to receive your tax coding notice. Your employer will use this to deduct the correct tax from your salary. Residency for tax purposes is based on spending 183+ days per year on the island.

Apostille Isle of Man documents at the Courts of Justice

The Isle of Man is covered by the Hague Apostille Convention (extended with the UK since 1965), but Manx documents are apostilled locally: the Competent Authority is the Isle of Man Courts of Justice at Deemsters Walk in Douglas — not the UK FCDO. Documents witnessed or signed by an Isle of Man notary or advocate can only carry an Isle of Man apostille. The service takes roughly a week.

Get a local SIM card

UK mobile networks (EE, O2, Vodafone, Three) technically operate in the Isle of Man through roaming agreements, but the island is not part of the UK's mobile network — calls and data may incur roaming charges depending on your UK tariff. Manx Telecom is the island's own mobile provider. Sure and AT&T also operate on the island. A Manx Telecom local SIM avoids roaming issues.

Set up home broadband (Manx Telecom or Sure)

Manx Telecom and Sure are the two main home broadband providers on the Isle of Man. Manx Telecom has substantially completed a £60 million fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) rollout covering over 41,000 properties, offering gigabit-capable plans typically on a 24-month term with router and installation included. Sure offers competing unlimited fibre plans. Coverage and exact speeds available depend on your specific address, so check both providers before committing to a lease.

Save local emergency numbers and register with your consulate

Register with your home country's embassy or consulate — for most nationalities this is the UK's relevant embassy since the Isle of Man does not have its own diplomatic missions. Save all key IoM emergency numbers. As a small island, knowing local contacts is more important than in a large country.

Plan around the TT road closures (late May–early June)

The Isle of Man TT motorcycle races close public roads across a large stretch of the island every year, and it catches new residents off guard the first time. The 2026 festival runs from opening practice on Monday 25 May to the Senior TT on Saturday 6 June, with daily closures during practice and race sessions — for example, a full-course closure from 12:30pm on qualifying days, reopening briefly, then closing again in the evening. If you live near the TT Course (much of the island's road network), you need to plan errands, commuting and childcare around the daily closure windows for the whole period, not just on headline race days.

Register for Isle of Man Government Online Services

The Isle of Man Government runs an Online Services portal (services.gov.im) where you register once and then handle government business digitally — most importantly your income tax affairs with the Income Tax Division (returns, coding, correspondence), plus vehicle and other services as they come online. Register early: your first Manx tax return (see the tax return task) is much easier through the portal.

Know the Manx minimum wage and employment basics

The Isle of Man sets its own minimum wage: from 1 April 2026 the single hourly rate is £13.46 (up from £12.25), with a youth rate of £10.76 — on a policy path towards 66% of median earnings. Employment law is Manx, not English: contracts, notice and tribunal routes follow Isle of Man legislation, and remember that taking a job at all normally requires an Isle of Man work permit unless you are an Isle of Man worker (see the work permit task).

Claim Isle of Man Child Benefit (income-tested)

The Isle of Man pays its own Child Benefit, administered by the Treasury and tested on household reckonable income: full benefit (£28.65 per week per child at current rates) if income is £60,000 or less, a reduced amount between £60,001 and £90,000, and nothing above that. The residence condition matters for newcomers: you or the child must have been resident in the Isle of Man or the UK for more than 182 days in the 52 weeks before claiming — so a fresh arrival from outside the British Isles may need to wait.

Understand the Manx pound — same value, different notes

The Isle of Man issues its own banknotes and coins, the Manx pound, at parity with sterling (£1 Manx = £1 GBP) and it's legal tender only on the island. British Bank of England, Scottish and Northern Irish notes are all freely accepted on the Isle of Man, but the reverse isn't true: Manx notes are not legal tender in the UK and most UK retailers will refuse them, even though UK banks and bureaux de change will exchange them. If you're heading to the UK, spend down or exchange your Manx cash first rather than assuming it works like a UK banknote everywhere.

Register with an NHS-equivalent (Manx Care) dentist

Dental care on the Isle of Man is provided partly under Manx Care (NHS-equivalent funding) and partly privately. Register with a Manx Care dentist as soon as possible — spaces are limited. Basic check-ups and treatments are subsidised under Manx Care. Adults pay a fixed charge per course of treatment.

Understand Manx Care prescription charges

Unlike free-at-the-point-of-use GP registration, prescriptions on the Isle of Man carry a per-item charge unless you qualify for an exemption or hold a pre-paid certificate. A pre-paid certificate costs £54 for 12 months or £19 for 4 months and gives any Isle of Man resident aged 16+ (19+ if a full-time student) unlimited prescription items for that period. Following 2026 Tynwald approval of new regulations, you can now also spread the £54 annual cost over 10 monthly direct debit payments of £5.40 instead of paying it upfront. Some items, including contraceptive appliances and substances, remain free regardless.

Secure housing and complete tenancy registration

The Isle of Man property market is active and rentals can be competitive, especially in Douglas and surrounding areas. Most expats rent initially. Tenancy agreements follow broadly similar terms to the UK. There is no formal tenancy deposit scheme requirement as in the UK, but best practice is to have a written inventory.

Get travel health insurance — you are NOT covered by UK GHIC

A fact that surprises many arrivals: Isle of Man residents are not entitled to a UK GHIC or EHIC, because the island is not part of the UK. That means no state-backed emergency healthcare cover in the EU — private travel insurance is essential for European (and other) trips. Within the British Isles you are better placed: the Isle of Man and UK have a reciprocal health agreement, so necessary treatment when visiting the UK is covered.

Try some Manx Gaelic (Gaelg)

English is the everyday language, but Manx Gaelic is reviving and 2026 is officially the Year of the Manx Language. Culture Vannin provides adult classes, learning materials and the LearnManx website, and runs the annual Scoill Souree summer school (around £150 per course including tuition, materials and a completion certificate, with bursaries for students and low incomes). Even a few phrases — and understanding place names — connects you to the island in a way visitors never get.

Use a Manx advocate for legal matters — this is not England

The Isle of Man is its own legal jurisdiction: the law is rooted in common law principles but is distinct from English law, with its own legislation (passed by Tynwald), its own courts and its own legal profession — lawyers here are advocates, regulated by the Isle of Man Law Society. Property purchases, wills, employment disputes and anything touching Manx law needs an advocate; a UK solicitor cannot simply act for you on-island.

Import your pet to the Isle of Man

The Isle of Man operates its own pet import rules under the UK's post-Brexit framework. Pets entering from the UK require a health check within 10 days of travel and must travel via approved routes (ferry from Heysham, Liverpool, or Birkenhead, or by air via Ronaldsway Airport). Pets from the EU and beyond require an AHC (Animal Health Certificate) and microchipping. The island has its own rabies-free status to protect.

Register your vehicle with the DVLA (IoM) and get IoM insurance

If you bring a vehicle to the Isle of Man or purchase one, you must register it with the Isle of Man DVLA (separate from the UK DVLA). Isle of Man vehicle registration plates (format: MAN prefix or letters specific to island) are issued locally. You also need motor insurance from a provider covering the Isle of Man.

Understand how your UK National Insurance record carries over

The Isle of Man runs its own National Insurance scheme, but a reciprocal agreement with the UK (in force since 1977) effectively treats the two schemes as one for key contributory benefits — your UK contributions support entitlement to the state retirement pension, jobseeker's allowance and incapacity benefit when you move to the island, and vice versa. Change is coming: a new reciprocal agreement is due from April 2027, under which NI will generally be paid where the work physically takes place — significant for hybrid and cross-border workers — and the island gains more independent NI policy.
