Indefinite Leave to Remain (Settlement)
Eligibility
Non-British and non-Irish nationals who have lawfully resided in the Isle of Man for 5 continuous years on an eligible route may apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), the Isle of Man equivalent of permanent settlement. The route mirrors UK immigration law but is administered under Manx rules. Spouses of British citizens on a family visa may qualify after 5 years of residence.

ILR removes the requirement to renew a visa and allows work and residence indefinitely. Manx Worker status (acquired separately through the work-permit system after 5 years of continuous ordinary residence) removes work-permit obligations but is not the same as immigration settlement.

British Citizenship via Isle of Man Residence
Eligibility
Persons who hold Indefinite Leave to Remain (settlement) in the Isle of Man may apply for British naturalisation once they have completed the required residence and settlement periods. The standard route requires 5 years of qualifying residence in the United Kingdom and Crown Dependencies, with the final 12 months on ILR. Spouses of British citizens qualify after 3 years of residence. British citizenship through this route is full British nationality covering all purposes.

Applications are made under British nationality law. Isle of Man residence counts towards the qualifying period. British law permits dual citizenship, so applicants do not need to renounce their original nationality.

Manx Worker Status
Eligibility
Manx Worker status is an Isle of Man-specific employment designation acquired after 5 years of unbroken ordinary residence on the Island. It removes or significantly reduces work-permit requirements for the holder. It is distinct from immigration settlement (ILR) and is governed by the Control of Employment Act.

Manx Worker status eliminates the annual work-permit renewal process. It does not confer immigration settlement or citizenship rights. British and Irish citizens living on the Island do not need Manx Worker status to work but may find the designation useful for certain regulatory purposes.
British/Irish CTA Rights
Eligibility
British and Irish citizens enjoy special mobility and residence rights in the Isle of Man under the Common Travel Area (CTA) framework without requiring immigration entry clearance. British citizens who move to the Isle of Man do not need a visa to enter but may still need to satisfy Manx work-permit requirements for employment.

Persons who naturalise as British citizens are not required to renounce their original nationality, and British citizens who acquire a foreign nationality do not automatically lose their British passport.
