Isle of Man (IM)
The Isle of Man is a self-governing Crown Dependency of the British Crown in the Irish Sea, known for its favourable tax environment (no capital gains tax, no inheritance tax, low income tax), world-famous TT motorcycle races, and a thriving financial services, e-gaming, and technology sector.
Key Documents Checklist
Gather these before and after moving to Isle of Man.
Required for travel, immigration status checks, right-to-work verification, banking onboarding and government services.
Non-British and non-Irish nationals usually need Isle of Man-specific permission under rules aligned with UK immigration routes. The IoM operates its own immigration system separate from the UK.
Many non-Manx workers — including some UK and Irish citizens — need a Manx work permit before starting Isle of Man employment. Apply through the IoM Work Permit Unit (Department for Enterprise).
Required for work permit applications, ITIP tax coding (Isle of Man Income Tax Payroll system), bank account opening and rental affordability checks.
Tenancy agreement, utility bill or government letter; required for bank account opening, GP registration and driving licence exchange.
Required for payroll, ITIP tax deductions, benefits entitlement and pension records. Existing UK NI numbers are usually accepted in Manx payroll, but registration with the IoM Income Tax Division is also required.
Required for dependants, school enrolment, visa applications, benefits claims and estate planning. The UK (including the Isle of Man) is a Hague Apostille member; apostille is valid for documents from Hague member countries. Non-member countries: embassy legalisation required.
UK and EU/EEA licences are generally recognised. Holders of non-UK/non-EEA licences should check exchange rules with the Isle of Man Vehicle Registration and Licensing (VRL) office; some licences can be exchanged directly, others require a test. Confirm insurance validity before driving.
Useful for GP registration with Manx Care (Isle of Man health service), school enrolment and private insurance underwriting.
Required for dogs, cats and ferrets travelling to the Isle of Man. Post-Brexit pet travel rules (Great Britain rules) apply rather than the EU pet passport scheme; confirm the most recent IoM government guidance.
Manx financial institutions often require evidence of tax residence, salary source, property sale proceeds or savings history for account opening, given the island's offshore finance sector compliance requirements.
Required for regulated roles in finance compliance, healthcare, teaching and construction. Overseas qualifications are assessed by the relevant professional body or through UK ENIC (formerly UK NARIC) for formal recognition.
📜 What is an Apostille?
An apostille is an official certification that validates a document for international use. It is issued by a designated authority in the country where the document was issued (usually a court or government office). Required for documents from Hague Convention member states.
🌍 Certified Translations
Certified translations must be done by a sworn/authorised translator. In Isle of Man, only translations by officially registered translators are accepted by government offices. Keep originals — they may be returned after verification.
