Isle of Man (IM)
The Isle of Man is a self-governing Crown Dependency of the British Crown in the Irish Sea, known for its favourable tax environment (no capital gains tax, no inheritance tax, low income tax), world-famous TT motorcycle races, and a thriving financial services, e-gaming, and technology sector.

How to properly exit — protecting your finances, rights and records.
📅 General Timeline
90 days before: Obtain pension forecast from DHSS; review IoM-source income that may require ongoing Non-Resident returns; notify employer; request school transfer certificates if departing with children. 60 days before: Give rental notice (4 weeks minimum for periodic; check your lease); contact income tax adviser about Form R26 and final return obligations; begin shipping or storage quotes. 30 days before: Notify Manx Utilities of departure and final reading dates; cancel broadband with required notice; collect GP medical records and ongoing referral letters; confirm bank will operate as non-resident account. 14 days before: Submit Form R26 to the Income Tax Division (gov.im). Final week: Inventory check-out with landlord; photograph all rooms; return keys; exchange any Manx Pound notes for Sterling or other currency before departure; keep MitID/online banking and email address accessible post-departure for income tax correspondence.
Deregistration
The Isle of Man has no Germany-style mandatory address deregistration, but several official notifications are required. (1) Income Tax Division — this is the most important step: complete Form R26 (Leaving the Isle of Man), available at gov.im/categories/tax-vat-and-your-money/income-tax-and-national-insurance/individuals/residents/leaving-the-island/. Submit it as soon as possible after leaving to enable the Division to finalise your resident tax affairs. (2) Employer — obtain your P45-equivalent leaving certificate and final payslip. (3) Manx Care — notify your GP surgery of your departure; deregister from the Manx Care patient register. (4) DVLA equivalent — notify the DVLA if you are exporting or selling a vehicle. (5) Electoral roll — notify your local authority. (6) Banks, insurers, DHSS (Department of Health and Social Security) — update address and status. No physical deregistration confirmation document is issued.
Tax clearance
You must complete and return Form R26 (Leaving the Isle of Man) to the Income Tax Division. Following submission, the Division will raise a final income tax return covering 6 April to your date of departure — this return must include all worldwide income received during that period. Deadline: submit the return within 6 months of departure to avoid a £100 automatic penalty; a further £200 penalty applies if not submitted within 12 months. The Isle of Man has no exit tax on unrealised capital gains or assets held on departure. If you continue to receive IoM-source income (rental income, occupational pension, private pension — but not the IoM State Pension) after leaving, you must file a Non-Resident return annually. The IoM has tax information exchange agreements and tax treaties with a number of countries — check gov.im for the treaty with your destination country. Pension portability
Keep your National Insurance (NI) contribution record up to date — contributions paid in the Isle of Man count toward the Manx State Pension. Request a State Pension forecast from the DHSS (dhss.gov.im) before leaving. Private and occupational pension schemes: obtain statements from your pension provider; check whether your scheme allows transfer to a QROPS (Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme) in your destination country — an incorrect transfer from a Manx pension scheme can have significant Manx and destination-country tax consequences. The Isle of Man is a Crown Dependency, not in the EU, and does not automatically benefit from EU social security coordination. Check bilateral social security agreements between the IoM and your destination country at gov.im.
Health insurance
Manx Care (manxcare.im) provides public healthcare to ordinarily resident persons. Eligibility ends when you cease to be ordinarily resident on the Island. There is no formal health deregistration process — notify your GP and Manx Care of your departure. Arrange private international health insurance before departure, ensuring there is no gap in coverage. Collect complete medical records, specialist letters, repeat prescriptions and vaccination history from your GP before leaving. If you have ongoing Manx Care referrals or hospital appointments, notify the relevant department of your departure date so care can be transferred to your destination provider.
Bank account
Isle of Man banks (HSBC IoM, Conister Bank, Lloyds Isle of Man, Nedbank Private Wealth) are experienced in international banking and generally allow non-resident accounts, subject to updated tax residency, address and source-of-funds documentation — contact your bank before leaving to arrange the transition. Do not close the account until: final salary, tax refund, rent deposit and any IoM pension or investment proceeds have cleared. Keep online banking access and a means of receiving bank OTP active after departure. Wise (wise.com) is effective for converting GBP to other currencies; the IoM uses GBP at parity with Sterling but issues its own Manx Pound notes — these are not legal tender in the UK, so exchange them before leaving.
Utilities
Manx Utilities (manxutilities.im): the state-owned provider of electricity, gas and water on the Island — notify them of your departure date, arrange final meter readings and settle outstanding bills. Isle of Man Telecom / Broadband: give the required contractual notice (typically 30 days for broadband); return rented equipment. Mobile providers: keep a SIM active if you need it for bank OTP after leaving. Photograph all meters on handover day. Check whether your rental agreement includes utilities — if not, each service requires separate cancellation.
Rental contract
The Isle of Man Tenancies Act 2024 (which replaced earlier legislation) sets out the notice periods and tenant rights for residential tenancies. For periodic (rolling) tenancies, 4 weeks written notice from the tenant is standard. For fixed-term tenancies, the agreement must run to its contractual end date unless a break clause exists or the landlord and tenant agree early surrender in writing. Serve notice in writing, retain a copy, and conduct a documented inventory check-out with the landlord or agent. The deposit should be protected in an approved Tenancy Deposit Scheme and returned — minus any agreed deductions — within a reasonable period after handover. There is no formal Nachmieter or tenant-replacement mechanism under IoM law.
