🧑💻 Freelancer / Self-Employed Guide
Steps to register:
- 1 Confirm your immigration permission and whether your specific activity requires a Manx work permit or other approval under the Control of Employment Acts.
- 2 Register with the Income Tax Division (gov.im) and understand your ITIP coding, self-assessment deadlines and National Insurance class obligations.
- 3 Check whether taxable turnover may exceed the GBP 90,000 VAT/customs threshold aligned with the UK VAT area, and register for VAT if so.
- 4 Open a business bank account and prepare source-of-funds, source-of-wealth and KYC documentation — Manx banks apply strict checks.
- 5 Take out professional indemnity, public liability and cyber cover if your work involves clients, regulated data or professional advice.
- 6 Use written contracts specifying governing law as Isle of Man law, payment terms and whether work is performed on or off the Island.
Tax registration
Isle of Man Income Tax Division at gov.im. Register for income tax and self-assessment; self-employed people pay Class 2 NI (GBP 6.45/week if above the small-earnings exception) and Class 4 NI (8% on profits between GBP 8,736 and GBP 53,664; 1% above) for 2025/26.
VAT threshold
GBP 90,000 taxable turnover from 1 April 2025, aligned with the UK VAT and customs area. Once registered, charge 20% VAT on standard-rated supplies and file quarterly returns with the Isle of Man Customs and Excise Division.
Invoicing
Invoices must show: trading name, address, VAT number if registered, invoice number, date, clear service description, amounts, VAT rate and amount, payment terms and bank details. Regulated financial-services and legal work may require additional client disclosures.
Social security
Self-employed residents pay Class 2 and Class 4 National Insurance; gaps in contributions can reduce Manx state pension entitlement. There is no unemployment insurance for the self-employed.
💡 The low-tax headline attracts attention, but Manx banks and landlords closely scrutinise freelancers. Arrive with signed contracts, six months of bank statements, professional references and a cash buffer. Reputation travels quickly on a small island.
