Denominations
Coins: 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p, £1, £2. Notes: £1 (unique to IoM), £5, £10, £20, £50. Note: Manx notes and coins are legal tender only on the Isle of Man. GBP (UK pounds) are accepted everywhere on the island. Do not attempt to use Manx notes in the UK — they may be refused by shops.
Payment Culture
Card payment by Visa and Mastercard is widely accepted across Douglas and most of the island. Contactless payment is standard. Some smaller rural businesses, market stalls, and village pubs prefer cash. Generally a cashless-friendly environment similar to the UK.
ATM Tips
ATMs are available in Douglas, Ramsey, Peel, and most main towns. Lloyds, HSBC, and Isle of Man Bank (a Royal Bank of Scotland subsidiary) have ATMs island-wide. UK debit and credit cards work without extra charges. Foreign cards may incur standard international fees.
Exchange Tips
GBP is interchangeable with IMP for all practical purposes. No need to exchange if arriving from the UK. Those arriving from the EU or further afield should exchange to GBP/IMP at the airport or a Douglas bureau de change. Wise and Revolut work well for international spending. Avoid exchanging Manx notes before leaving — exchange them on the island or at the Isle of Man Bank.
