๐งโ๐ป Freelancer / Self-Employed Guide
Steps to register:
- 1 Obtain a Tax Registration Number (TRN) from Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ) โ required before any self-employment income is earned.
- 2 Register your business name (optional but recommended) at the Companies Office of Jamaica if trading under a name other than your own.
- 3 Register for GCT (General Consumption Tax) if your annual turnover exceeds J$10 million โ complete Form GCT1 at TAJ.
- 4 Obtain an NIS (National Insurance Scheme) number if not already employed โ register at the Ministry of Labour and Social Security.
- 5 Set up a dedicated business bank account to separate personal and business finances.
- 6 Keep all invoices, receipts and records of income and expenses for annual tax filing.
- 7 File quarterly estimated tax payments (if applicable) and annual income tax return by March 15.
Tax registration
Self-employed individuals must file an annual income tax return (IT01 form) with TAJ by March 15. Quarterly estimated tax payments (called "instalments") are required if your annual liability exceeds a threshold. Maintain records of all business income and deductible expenses.
VAT threshold
J$10,000,000 annual turnover. Below this threshold, GCT registration is optional but beneficial if your clients are GCT-registered businesses (allows input tax credit). Above the threshold, registration is mandatory.
Invoicing
Invoices must include your name/business name, TRN, address, invoice number, date, clear description of services, amount and applicable GCT if registered. GCT-registered businesses must issue GCT invoices for all taxable supplies.
Social security
Self-employed individuals must register with NIS and contribute at 3% of their self-employed income (both employee and employer portions, so effectively 6% combined). Must also pay NHT at 3% and Education Tax at 2.25% (self-employed rate). Pay through TAJ during tax filing.
