Jamaica recognises foreign qualifications through a combination of professional regulatory bodies and the University Council of Jamaica (UCJ). Regulated professions (medicine, law, nursing, engineering, pharmacy, teaching) require registration with the relevant professional council and may require proof of equivalent qualifications. Academic degrees may need evaluation by the UCJ. Jamaica is a signatory to the CARICOM mutual recognition agreement for certain professional categories (engineers, architects, nurses, teachers, physicians, dentists and some other health professionals) from other CARICOM states.
Regulated Professions
Process: Apply to the relevant professional council with apostilled copies of your qualifications, transcripts, registration certificates from your home jurisdiction, police certificate, medical fitness certificate and completed application form. Some councils require a language test for non-English speakers. Some require supervised practice or examinations before granting full registration.
Authority: Relevant statutory professional council (see examples above). The University Council of Jamaica (UCJ) handles academic degree equivalency evaluations for non-regulated fields.
Timeline: 3–6 months for most professional registrations (can be longer for medicine and law). Academic equivalency from UCJ: 4–8 weeks.
Cost: Application fees vary by profession: typically J$10,000–J$40,000 for initial registration plus annual licence fee. UCJ academic evaluation: J$5,000–J$15,000.
Academic Degrees
Authority: University Council of Jamaica (UCJ)
Process: Submit academic transcripts, degree certificate (apostilled), course descriptions and programme information to UCJ. UCJ assesses equivalency to Jamaican education levels.
Equivalency service: UCJ Regional Academic Qualifications Equivalency (RAQE) service. Also CARICOM's Caribbean Area Network for Quality Assurance in Tertiary Education (CANQATE) for regional degrees.
Document Rules
Apostille: Jamaica is a member of the Hague Apostille Convention. Documents issued by Hague Convention member countries should be apostilled. Foreign documents with an apostille are accepted without further legalisation.
Legalisation: Documents from non-Hague Convention countries must be legalised through the foreign country's ministry of foreign affairs and then authenticated by the Jamaican Embassy or High Commission in that country (or the country's diplomatic mission in Jamaica).
Sworn translation: All documents not in English must be accompanied by a sworn translation from a certified translator. Jamaican professional bodies will specify their translation requirements.

Typical Timelines
Medical registration: 4–8 months including supervised practice period. Legal qualification: must complete Jamaican Bar examinations (Norman Manley Law School) — foreign lawyers cannot simply register. Nursing: 3–6 months with CARICOM mutual recognition possible within 4–8 weeks for CARICOM nurses. Teaching: 2–4 months with TCJ. Engineering: 3–5 months with JIE. Academic degree equivalency (UCJ): 4–8 weeks.
CARICOM nationals benefit from mutual recognition agreements in certain professions. If you come from a CARICOM state with a regulated professional qualification, the process may be faster. The CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME) free movement of skills includes engineers, architects, nurses, teachers, physicians, dentists, pharmacists and some other categories — check the current CARICOM list. Non-CARICOM professionals should contact the specific council directly well before their expected start date.
