Government subsidises some Early Childhood Commission (ECC)-registered institutions. Look for ECC certification when choosing a centre.

Contact the institution directly. Provide birth certificate, immunisation records and a completed application form. Private ECIs often have their own admissions requirements.

Government contributes to basic school funding. Community-based basic schools have lower fees but varying quality.

Government Primary School Free

Government / Upgraded All-Age School

Ages: 6–12 years (Grades 1–6) · Language: English (with Jamaican Patois informally used)

Register at your local education district office (Ministry of Education). Provide birth certificate, immunisation records and proof of address. All children must sit the Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT/PEP) to determine secondary school placement.

Government primary schools are free but quality varies. Uniform and books costs are extra. Private preparatory schools (prep schools) offer smaller classes and enhanced curricula at J$30,000–J$100,000+/term.

Government High School / Traditional High School Free

High School / Technical/Vocational School

Ages: 12–18 years (Grades 7–11/13) · Language: English

Placement by Primary Exit Profile (PEP) results managed by the Ministry of Education. Students ranked and matched to secondary schools. CSEC (Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate) examinations taken at Grade 11; CAPE at Grades 12–13.

Traditional high schools (like Kingston College, Jamaica College, Immaculate Conception High) are highly competitive and prestigious. Private secondary schools and international schools charge J$60,000–J$300,000/term. CSEC and CAPE examinations are regionally recognised across CARICOM.

International Schools

Kingston International School, Campion College (elite Catholic high school), American International School of Kingston (AISK; 2023/24 fees USD $10,398 EYP to USD $23,668 Grade 12 — confirm current 2026 rates at aisk.com) and several church-run private schools serve the expat and professional community. Annual fees at AISK were USD $10,000–24,000 in recent years; confirm current rates. IB (International Baccalaureate) programmes are available at a small number of schools. Apply 6–12 months ahead for popular international programmes. Montego Bay also has several private schools popular with the resort community.

University

Tuition fee

University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona: J$200,000–J$600,000 per year for Jamaican students; international student fees higher. Private universities (Northern Caribbean University, University of Technology Jamaica — UTech): J$400,000–J$900,000/year. US universities with Jamaica campuses charge US-equivalent rates.

Semester fee

UWI Mona charges a guild fee and amenities fee of J$15,000–J$25,000/semester in addition to tuition.

Student visa

Non-CARICOM international students must apply for a Student Permit from PICA (Passport, Immigration and Citizenship Agency). Required: acceptance letter, proof of funds, health insurance and medical certificate. CARICOM nationals do not need a permit.

Health insurance

UWI Mona and UTech require students to register with a student health plan or provide evidence of existing health coverage. Private international health insurance is recommended for expat students.

Application process

Apply directly to UWI, UTech or private universities. UWI Mona has an online application portal. Deadlines vary by programme (typically February–April for September start). Required: CSEC/CAPE results or equivalent, personal statement, references.

Popular among Jamaicans and expats given proximity to Spanish-speaking Latin America and Caribbean. Private schools like Hablar Spanish School in Kingston offer flexible scheduling.

Jamaican Sign Language (JSL)
