👶 Childcare & Kindergarten
Government subsidises some Early Childhood Commission (ECC)-registered institutions. Look for ECC certification when choosing a centre.
Contact the institution directly. Provide birth certificate, immunisation records and a completed application form. Private ECIs often have their own admissions requirements.
Government contributes to basic school funding. Community-based basic schools have lower fees but varying quality.
Apply directly to the school. Required: birth certificate, immunisation records, proof of address. Some faith-based basic schools may require church membership letters.
🏫 Schools
Register at your local education district office (Ministry of Education). Provide birth certificate, immunisation records and proof of address. All children must sit the Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT/PEP) to determine secondary school placement.
Placement by Primary Exit Profile (PEP) results managed by the Ministry of Education. Students ranked and matched to secondary schools. CSEC (Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate) examinations taken at Grade 11; CAPE at Grades 12–13.
🌍 International Schools
Kingston International School, Campion College (elite Catholic high school), American International School of Kingston (AISK; 2023/24 fees USD $10,398 EYP to USD $23,668 Grade 12 — confirm current 2026 rates at aisk.com) and several church-run private schools serve the expat and professional community. Annual fees at AISK were USD $10,000–24,000 in recent years; confirm current rates. IB (International Baccalaureate) programmes are available at a small number of schools. Apply 6–12 months ahead for popular international programmes. Montego Bay also has several private schools popular with the resort community.
🎓 University
Apply directly to UWI, UTech or private universities. UWI Mona has an online application portal. Deadlines vary by programme (typically February–April for September start). Required: CSEC/CAPE results or equivalent, personal statement, references.
🗣️ Language Courses
For non-native English speakers entering UWI. Limited demand given English is the official language, but available for students from Spanish-speaking CARICOM countries.
Popular among Jamaicans and expats given proximity to Spanish-speaking Latin America and Caribbean. Private schools like Hablar Spanish School in Kingston offer flexible scheduling.
For those working with or alongside the deaf community. Some employers in healthcare and education value JSL skills.
