📅 General Timeline
Start 3 months before departure: give notice to landlord; begin NHT refund application; settle outstanding taxes with TAJ. Start 2 months before: cancel or port health insurance; give notice to utilities; notify bank and employer. Start 1 month before: final tax clearance certificate; close or notify bank; confirm school transfer documents for children. Final week: final utility readings; collect any refunds; airport departure.
Deregistration
Jamaica has no formal deregistration system for departing residents. However, expats should notify PICA (Passport, Immigration and Citizenship Agency) if they hold a permit that will lapse. Notify your employer in writing per your notice period. Inform your bank, landlord, schools, utilities and any government agencies (TAJ, NIS) of your departure. Ensure your TRN records are updated if your tax status changes. No exit interview or departure card system exists beyond the standard immigration form at the airport.
Tax clearance
Expats and residents with outstanding Jamaican tax obligations should obtain a tax clearance certificate from Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ) before leaving permanently. Required for: property sale proceeds to be transferred abroad, business wind-down, and some immigration applications in other countries. Apply at any TAJ office. Allow 2–4 weeks. You must file all outstanding returns and pay any taxes due before TAJ will issue clearance.
Pension portability
National Insurance Scheme (NIS) contributions are not refundable on departure. If you have accumulated contributions, you may be entitled to benefits if you return to Jamaica or meet benefit eligibility thresholds. Jamaica has social security totalization agreements with limited countries — check with the NIS office whether your home country has a bilateral arrangement. National Housing Trust (NHT) contributions may be refundable if you have not used them for housing and you are leaving permanently — apply to NHT before departure.
Health insurance
Private health insurance in Jamaica typically ends when you leave or cancel your policy. Give the required notice to your insurer (usually 30 days). If your employer provided health cover as a benefit, it ends when employment ends. Ensure any ongoing treatments or pending claims are resolved before your policy lapses. Arrange new health cover in your destination country before Jamaican cover ends.
Bank account
Most Jamaican bank accounts can be maintained from abroad if the account is in good standing and you can satisfy periodic KYC (Know Your Customer) update requests. Some banks require in-person updates and may restrict accounts for non-residents after a period. Notify your bank of your departure and new address. Close accounts with no further use to avoid maintenance fees. Transfer funds before closure — international wire transfers are straightforward from NCB, Scotiabank and JN Bank.
Utilities
Give notice to JPS (electricity) and NWC (water) before your final move-out date. Request a final reading and bill settlement. Return any rental equipment (e.g., cable boxes to FLOW). Cancel internet and cable TV subscriptions with required notice periods (typically 30 days for FLOW and Digicel). Some providers will hold a final bill against your deposit — collect receipts for all cancellations.
Rental contract
Review your lease for notice period requirements — typically 1–3 months for expat-quality rentals. Give notice in writing. Request a walk-through with your landlord before departure to agree on the property condition. The deposit should be returned within 30 days after you vacate (confirm the exact terms in your lease). Document the property condition at handover with photos.
