Jamaica (JM)
Reggae rhythms, stunning beaches, and a vibrant English-speaking culture make Jamaica the Caribbean's most iconic destination.
Insurance Guide
Which insurances you actually need in Jamaica, prioritised.
Insurance in Jamaica is regulated by the Financial Services Commission (FSC). Key providers include Sagicor Life, Guardian Life, JN Life, Canopy Insurance and Scotia Insurance. Motor insurance is mandatory. Health, property and life insurance are essential for expats. For international coverage and medical evacuation, international insurers are strongly recommended alongside or instead of local private health plans.
Legally Mandatory
- - Motor vehicle third-party insurance (mandatory to drive legally in Jamaica)
International Health Insurance with Evacuation
Comprehensive health coverage including medical evacuation to Trinidad, Miami or other specialist centres.
Who needs it: All expats and long-term visitors. Essential due to limited specialist care in Jamaica.
Annual cost: USD $1,500–$6,000 per person depending on age, deductible and coverage level
Ensure the policy covers medical evacuation and specifies the destination (Miami is closest and most practical). Confirm any pre-existing condition exclusions before signing. Renew before arrival in Jamaica.
Motor Vehicle Insurance (Third Party)
Mandatory minimum coverage — third party liability for injury or death caused to other road users.
Who needs it: All vehicle owners and drivers. Without it, driving is illegal.
Annual cost: J$15,000–J$30,000 per year for third party only; J$40,000–J$120,000+ for comprehensive
Third-party-only insurance covers others' injuries and deaths but not your own vehicle. Comprehensive covers your vehicle as well. In a crime-prevalent environment, comprehensive with theft cover is recommended.
Homeowner's / Renter's Insurance
Coverage for property damage, theft and liability. Hurricane coverage is a specific add-on or separate policy.
Who needs it: All property owners and renters. Hurricane season runs June–November every year.
Annual cost: J$50,000–J$200,000+/year depending on property value and coverage
Jamaica sits in the hurricane belt. Ensure your policy specifically covers named storms. Check the hurricane deductible — it can be 2–5% of the insured value (often separate from ordinary deductibles). Flood insurance may be separate.
Local Private Health Insurance
Local health coverage for GP visits, private hospital stays and specialist consultations in Jamaica.
Who needs it: Expats working for Jamaican employers who do not provide international coverage. Complements an international plan for routine care.
Annual cost: J$180,000–J$720,000 per person per year (J$15,000–J$60,000/month)
Local plans are more affordable than international plans for routine care. However, they often exclude medical evacuation and coverage abroad. Expats should not rely on local plans alone for serious conditions.
Comprehensive Motor Vehicle Insurance
Full coverage including own vehicle damage, theft, fire, and third party liability.
Who needs it: All vehicle owners in Jamaica, especially those with newer or more valuable vehicles.
Annual cost: J$40,000–J$150,000+ per year depending on vehicle value and excess
Jamaica's roads present real accident risk, and vehicle theft can occur. Comprehensive insurance is strongly recommended. Check the excess (deductible) carefully — it can be high.
Life Insurance
Term or whole life coverage to protect family and dependants in the event of death.
Who needs it: Expats with dependants, those with Jamaican property or business interests, anyone planning long-term residence.
Annual cost: J$30,000–J$200,000/year depending on sum insured, age and health
Cross-border estate planning should consider where life insurance proceeds will be paid and any tax implications in both Jamaica and your home country. Use a licensed financial adviser.
Travel Insurance
Coverage for trip cancellation, medical emergencies, baggage loss and repatriation for short trips outside Jamaica.
Who needs it: All residents travelling abroad. If your international health insurance does not cover travel disruption, add a travel policy.
Annual cost: USD $50–$300 per trip or USD $200–$800 annual multi-trip plan
Check whether your credit card already includes travel insurance. Confirm medical coverage limits for your destination.

Never drive without at least third-party motor insurance — penalties and personal liability from uninsured driving can be severe.
Hurricane insurance is not optional in Jamaica — a named storm can occur any year between June and November.
Do not rely only on local health insurance. Get international health insurance with medical evacuation for serious conditions requiring overseas care.
Read hurricane deductible clauses carefully — they are often a percentage of the sum insured, not a fixed amount.
Verify all insurers are registered with the FSC before purchasing any policy.
