Moldova (MD)
Moldova is Eastern Europe's hidden gem — an EU candidate country since June 2022 and one of the continent's most affordable destinations, with a thriving wine culture, warm hospitality and a rapidly modernising capital.
Banking in Moldova
Recommended banks, payment culture and credit score basics.
Moldova's banking sector is modernising rapidly under National Bank of Moldova (NBM) supervision and EU accession pressure. Chișinău has branches of all major banks on nearly every block. Cards are widely accepted in the capital; cash (lei) is essential outside it. Opening a bank account requires a temporary residence permit and IDNP number — arrange your residence status before visiting a bank. International transfers via Wise or Revolut are the fastest and cheapest option for expats.

Payment culture
Chișinău is increasingly cashless — supermarkets, restaurants, pharmacies and most shops accept Visa/Mastercard contactless. Outside the capital, cash (lei) is essential. Village shops, markets, taxis and rural businesses often require cash. Always carry MDL 200–500 for everyday spending. POS terminals are standard at petrol stations, hotels and larger restaurants across the country. Mobile payments (Apple Pay / Google Pay via Revolut or Wise) work in most city-centre establishments.
Cash access
MAIB, Moldindconbank and Victoriabank ATMs are the most common and charge no fees for their own cardholders. Chișinău has ATMs on almost every main street. Outside the capital, find ATMs at petrol stations, post offices and supermarkets. Wise and Revolut cards withdraw MDL at competitive rates with 2 free withdrawals/month. ATMs in rural areas and mountain resorts may run out of cash on weekends — withdraw cash before travelling outside Chișinău.
Biroul de Credit Moldova
Request your credit report at birouldecredit.md — one free report per year. Banks check this database before approving loans or credit cards.
Free annual check: One free credit report per year at birouldecredit.md; additional reports charged at MDL 50–100.
Moldova's credit bureau (Biroul de Credit) tracks payment history for loans, credit cards and utilities. As a new expat you start with no local credit history. Build it by using a local debit card, paying utilities on time and maintaining a registered rental contract. Credit card approval for new residents typically requires 6–12 months of MAIB or MIB account history.
International transfers
Moldova joined SEPA in October 2025 (along with Albania, Montenegro, and North Macedonia) — EU bank transfers are now SEPA credit transfers (free/low-cost, same-day) rather than expensive SWIFT wires. Use Wise for non-SEPA international transfers (outside EU/EEA): mid-market rate with transparent fees around 0.5–1.5%. NBM (National Bank of Moldova) regulations require source-of-funds documentation for incoming transfers above EUR 10,000. Outgoing transfers above MDL 300,000 require additional bank compliance review.
