Romanian (Moldovan Romanian) is the official state language of Moldova and the key to integration. It is a Romance language closely related to Spanish, Italian, French and Portuguese — speakers of other Romance languages typically progress faster. Russian remains a de facto second language used in much of Chișinău's retail, services and older businesses. English is required for IT Park employment, NGOs and international organisations. Learning even basic Romanian (A1–A2) significantly eases daily life and builds trust with locals. No mandatory language requirement for residence permits — but naturalisation requires a Romanian language test.
Romanian Language Integration Courses for Foreigners
All foreign nationals with a valid residence permit. No income restrictions. Courses are open to all nationalities.
Free courses offered by NGOs (UNHCR-funded, EU-funded projects); paid private courses MDL 3,000–8,000 per semester

USM Language Centre Romanian for Foreigners
Universitatea de Stat din Moldova (USM) Language Centre offers semester-long Romanian language courses specifically designed for foreign students, expats and diplomatic staff. Small group classes and individual tutoring available.
Any foreign national or expatriate. No residency requirement for enrolment.
MDL 3,000–6,000/semester for group courses; MDL 350–600/hour for private lessons

Greetings, numbers, basic shopping phrases, ordering food. Can handle taxi, market and supermarket interactions.
Required for: Getting through daily life in Chișinău with minimal frustration. Landlord and building administrator communication.
Can have simple conversations, understand most shopping and service interactions, read menus and street signs.
Required for: Confident daily life; basic workplace communication in non-English environments.
Can handle most everyday situations: bank, doctor, government offices, employer conversations. Understands news and TV with effort.
Required for: Moldovan citizenship naturalisation minimum requirement; formal employment in most sectors.
Fluent in most practical situations. Can participate in meetings, negotiations and professional communication in Romanian.
Required for: Professional employment outside IT/international sector; government and legal proceedings.
Advanced Romanian fluency. Can work as a journalist, academic or senior professional entirely in Romanian.
Required for: Academic lecturing, legal practice and senior public administration roles.
Near-native Romanian proficiency in all four skills.
Required for: Translation, interpretation, academic publishing and highest-level professional roles in Romanian.

Funding Your Language Courses
No state-funded integration language programme with guaranteed places for adult expats exists in Moldova as of 2026. Free Romanian courses are available periodically through EU-funded projects and NGO programmes — monitor BMA.gov.md and the Expats in Moldova Facebook group for announcements. Some employers (particularly NGOs and international organisations) fund language courses for new expat hires. IT Park companies may offer language training as an employee benefit.

Start with Romanian — Russian is useful but Romanian opens government, legal and deeper social integration.

Phonetic alphabet: Romanian uses Latin script with special characters (ă, â, î, ș, ț). Practice these sounds early — they distinguish words.

Moldovan Romanian vs standard Romanian: Moldovan Romanian has some lexical differences from standard Romanian but is mutually intelligible. Learning standard Romanian (as taught by Duolingo, USM etc.) works perfectly in Moldova.

Start speaking immediately — Moldovans are forgiving of mistakes and genuinely appreciative of any effort with the language.
