Moldova (MD)
Moldova is Eastern Europe's hidden gem — an EU candidate country since June 2022 and one of the continent's most affordable destinations, with a thriving wine culture, warm hospitality and a rapidly modernising capital.
Mental Health Resources
Support, crisis lines and therapy access in Moldova.
Moldova's public mental health system is administered through the Ministerul Sănătății and delivered via psychiatric hospitals (spitale de psihiatrie) and dispensaries (dispensare psihoneurologice). The public system is underfunded and carries a stigma — many Moldovans avoid seeking public mental health care. A growing private therapy sector exists in Chișinău with qualified psychologists (psihologi) and psychotherapists (psihoterapeuți). English-language therapy is available but limited. International expats are advised to supplement public resources with private therapy or international telehealth platforms. Moldova has made mental health de-stigmatisation a national priority under EU accession commitments.

FreeAccessing Therapy
Through public insurance: CNAM covers psychiatric consultations at public psychiatric dispensaries and in-hospital treatment for severe conditions. To access: request a referral from your medic de familie (GP) or present at the Dispensarul Psihoneurologic (district psychiatric dispensary) directly. Psychologist and psychotherapy sessions in the public system are very limited and have long waiting lists. The public system is primarily focused on severe psychiatric conditions, not common mental health support.
Waiting times: Public psychiatric care: initial appointment typically within 2–4 weeks for non-emergency cases. Private psychologists: appointments usually available within 1–2 weeks. Crisis intervention: immediate via 112 or Linia Verde.
- - Book directly with a private psychologist (psiholog) or psychotherapist (psihoterapeut) — rates MDL 500–1,000/session
- - Use online/teletherapy platforms (BetterHelp, Talkspace) for English-language support
- - Contact the expat community (Expats in Moldova Facebook group) for recommendations for English-speaking therapists
- - Medpark International Hospital has a psychiatry and psychology outpatient service with English-language staff
- - Some embassies (US, UK, EU member states) maintain welfare officer contacts for their citizens experiencing mental health difficulties
Online Therapy
Insurance covered: No / partially
CNAM does not cover online therapy sessions. International health insurance (Cigna, Allianz) may cover online psychological consultations if prescribed by a doctor — check your policy. English-language platforms (BetterHelp, Talkspace) are fully accessible from Moldova with no geographic restrictions.
Expat-Specific Challenges
- -Language barrier: Romanian therapy is more available than English-language options; learning basic Romanian reduces isolation significantly
- -Culture shock: Moldova's contrasts (EU-aspiring city vs. post-Soviet infrastructure, economic inequality) can be jarring for expats from high-income countries
- -Limited English-speaking mental health professionals: the English-language therapy community in Chișinău is small — online platforms are often more practical
- -Social isolation: Chișinău has a smaller international community than capitals like Berlin or Bucharest — building social connections proactively is important
- -Work-life imbalance: IT sector work culture can be demanding; burnout is common among expat tech workers
- -Geopolitical anxiety: Moldova's proximity to conflict zones and its security situation can create background stress; most expats in Chișinău report feeling safe but news awareness helps manage anxiety
- -Family separation: many expats in Moldova are separated from extended family networks — video calls and scheduled visits are important for wellbeing
Moldova's Association of Psychologists (Asociația Psihologilor din Moldova) maintains a register of licensed practitioners. When seeking a private therapist, verify credentials through this register. The Expats in Moldova Facebook community is a practical source of personal recommendations for English-speaking mental health support.
