Payment Culture
Chișinău is increasingly cashless — supermarkets, restaurants, pharmacies and most shops accept Visa/Mastercard. Outside the capital, cash (lei) is essential. Markets, taxis, small towns and village shops often require cash. Always carry MDL 200–500 for everyday spending. ATMs (bancomate) are widely available in Chișinău and main towns.
ATM Tips
MAIB, Moldindconbank and Victoriabank ATMs are most common and charge no domestic fees. Wise and Revolut debit cards offer good MDL withdrawal rates. Avoid dynamic currency conversion (always choose MDL). ATMs in rural areas may run out of cash on weekends.
Exchange Tips
Use licensed exchange offices (case de schimb valutar) for EUR/USD to MDL. Rates are competitive and consistent. Banks offer slightly lower rates. Do not exchange money on the street. 1 EUR ≈ 19–20 MDL and 1 USD ≈ 18–19 MDL as of 2026 — rates float freely. Wise and Revolut offer near mid-market rates for international transfers.
