Recycling & Waste in Moldova
Bin system, bottle deposits, special disposal, and common mistakes.
Moldova's waste sorting infrastructure is developing but inconsistent. Chișinău municipality launched separate collection for plastic, glass and paper in central districts from 2023 as part of the Chișinău Green City initiative aligned with EU accession environmental standards. Most panel-block apartment buildings still use a single mixed-waste bin (tomberon). Rural areas have minimal sorting infrastructure. The national recycling rate remains low by EU standards but is improving annually. Follow the sorting rules in your district — check Primăria Chișinău (chisinau.md) for your district's specific collection schedule.

Bottle Return System (In Development) — Bottle Deposit System
Moldova does not yet have a formalised deposit return system (sistem garanție-returnare) for beverages as of 2026. A national implementation framework is under development as part of EU accession environmental alignment. Traditional glass bottle return at markets (piețe) continues informally — some beverage vendors collect and refill glass bottles for wine and dairy products.
No standardised deposit amounts yet. Traditional informal glass bottle returns: MDL 2–5 per bottle at market vendors.
Return glass bottles to the market vendor or wine producer you purchased from. For larger volumes of recyclable materials, use the Ecodepo collection points at major supermarkets (Nr.1, Kaufland).
Special Disposal
Dedicated collection boxes at Nr.1 supermarkets, Kaufland, Linella and pharmacies. Ecodepo collection points in central Chișinău.
Do not put batteries in regular bins — classified as hazardous waste. Municipal battery collection is gradually expanding.
Ecodepo collection points at major supermarkets. For large appliances: retailers are obligated to take back old equipment on delivery of new. Some electronics shops (Tehnomarket, Elmos) have collection bins.
Moldova has a nascent e-waste collection system. DEEE Moldova association coordinates collection. Fly-tipping of e-waste is illegal and carries fines.
Return expired or unused medicines to any pharmacy (farmacie). Pharmacies are required to accept returned medicines for proper disposal under Moldovan pharmaceutical law.
Never flush medicines down the toilet or drain — they contaminate water sources.
Return to auto parts shops (magazine auto) or authorised vehicle service centres. Service stations are obligated to collect used motor oil.
Pouring motor oil on the ground or into drains is illegal and carries environmental penalties.
Hire a licensed debris removal service (gunoi construcție) — advertised on 999.md. Arrange a special collection with Primăria Chișinău (chisinau.md).
Do not put construction waste in regular bins — heavy fines apply. Large-scale illegal dumping is actively prosecuted in Chișinău.
Donation bins at Kaufland and Interspar. Second-hand shops (magazine de second-hand) on str. Armenească and other central locations. Facebook Marketplace Moldova for direct gifting.
Textile recycling is not formalised in Moldova. Donation is the best route for usable clothing.
Bulk Waste
Large items (furniture, appliances): contact Primăria Chișinău for scheduled collection (chisinau.md — servicii municipale). Notice required 3–5 business days in advance. Some items collected for free; large volumes may incur a small fee. Alternatively, post on the Expats in Moldova Facebook group or Facebook Marketplace — second-hand furniture is in demand in Chișinău.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- ! Putting recyclables in the general bin — defeats the sorting system and leads to everything being landfilled
- ! Not rinsing plastic and glass before recycling — contaminated items are rejected
- ! Putting batteries in regular bins — hazardous and illegal
- ! Leaving bulk waste on the street without arranging a collection — fines from Primărie inspectors
- ! Burning waste in your garden or on your balcony — illegal in urban areas; fines MDL 500–2,000
Fines & Enforcement
Fines for illegal waste disposal: MDL 500–2,000 for illegal dumping by individuals; MDL 5,000–20,000 for companies. Construction debris dumping: MDL 1,000–5,000. Burning of waste: MDL 500–2,000.
Practical Tips
- → Check chisinau.md/servicii-municipale for your district's collection days — central Chișinău has more frequent pick-up than suburbs.
- → Bring glass and cardboard to the Ecodepo collection point at your nearest Kaufland or Nr.1 — they have separate containers for most materials.
- → Flattening cardboard boxes saves space in recycling bins and is appreciated by collection workers.
- → The Piața Centrală market accepts glass jars and bottles informally for reuse — ask vendors.
- → Farmacies (pharmacies) are the correct place for expired medicines — do not keep these in regular bins.
