Non-EU citizens: after 5 years continuous lawful residence in Poland. EU/EEA citizens: after 5 years continuous residence (right of permanent residence under EU freedom of movement). Shorter paths: 3 years if married to Polish citizen for 3+ years; 2 years with Karta Polaka. Recognised refugees, persons with Polish descent may also qualify.

Eligibility
By naturalisation: after 3–10 years of legal residence, depending on circumstances. 3 years: married to Polish citizen for 3+ years with 2 years of permanent residence. 5 years: permanent residence permit holders and EU long-term residents. 1–2 years: Karta Polaka holders (1 year if PR obtained via Karta; 2 years otherwise). Up to 10 years: all others. By descent: automatic Polish citizenship if one or both parents were Polish citizens at time of birth.

Two pathways: (1) Application to the President (nadanie obywatelstwa) — discretionary, no guaranteed right. (2) Confirmation of Polish citizenship (potwierdzenie posiadania obywatelstwa) — for those who already hold it by descent but have not claimed it. Processing: typically 1–3 years via presidential grant. Polish citizenship by descent can be claimed even after several generations without any requirement to reside in Poland. From 2026, applications are required to be submitted digitally through the Urząd Wojewódzki online system.

Eligibility
Anyone born to at least one Polish citizen parent automatically has Polish citizenship at birth (ius sanguinis). This applies even if born abroad and even if the parent later lost citizenship under communist-era deprivation laws — special reinstatement procedures available.

Dual citizenship is allowed — Poland does not formally restrict dual citizenship — Polish law does not require renouncing Polish citizenship on acquiring another nationality, and does not require newly naturalised Poles to renounce their prior citizenship. However, Poland officially recognises only Polish citizenship for Polish citizens — so if you hold dual nationality, Polish authorities will treat you as Polish only. Your home country may have its own dual citizenship restrictions. Check your home country's rules before applying.
