Poland (PL)
Poland is the largest country in Central Europe and a dynamic EU member state with one of the fastest-growing economies in Europe over the past two decades.
Insurance Guide
Which insurances you actually need in Poland, prioritised.
Poland has a mandatory health contribution (via NFZ/ZUS) and mandatory third-party car insurance (OC). Beyond these, most insurance is voluntary but strongly recommended. The insurance market is competitive and affordable compared to Western Europe. Major insurers include PZU (state-owned, largest), Ergo Hestia, Warta, Allianz, TUiR Warta, and Generali. Compare via rankomat.pl, mubi.pl, or direct insurer websites.
Legally Mandatory
- - OC pojazdu (third-party motor liability insurance) — mandatory for all registered vehicles
- - Składka zdrowotna NFZ (health contribution) — mandatory for all employed and self-employed persons
Health Insurance Supplement / Private Medical Plan
Subscription-based access to private healthcare network (LUX MED, Medicover) — faster specialists, English-speaking doctors, dental basics, preventive care
Who needs it: Everyone — particularly those who cannot wait months for NFZ specialist referrals. Essential for expats with limited Polish.
Annual cost: 1,200–3,600 zł/year (individual). Often employer-subsidised.
This is not traditional insurance — it is a monthly subscription for unlimited private clinic visits. Best value healthcare spend for expats in Poland. Many employers offer as a benefit.
Third-Party Car Insurance
Mandatory liability cover for damage you cause to others while driving. Minimum legal cover: 5.21 million EUR (personal injury), 1.05 million EUR (property).
Who needs it: Every vehicle owner
Annual cost: 500–2,000 zł/year depending on car, age, history
Compare via mubi.pl or rankomat.pl. NCB (no-claims bonus) from your home country may be recognised — ask insurer.
Comprehensive Car Insurance
Covers your own vehicle damage (theft, accident, weather). Supplements mandatory OC.
Who needs it: Car owners with newer or higher-value vehicles
Annual cost: 800–3,000 zł/year
Often required by car finance/leasing companies. Check excess (udział własny) carefully. Some policies cover theft of car parts or damage in car parks.
Home/Apartment Contents Insurance
Covers your personal belongings against theft, fire, flood, and accidental damage. Also covers building structure for owners.
Who needs it: All renters and owners
Annual cost: 200–600 zł/year (renter). 400–1,500 zł/year (owner, includes structure).
Landlords often require tenants to have contents insurance. Very affordable. Covers common events like burst pipes, theft, and fire.
Personal Liability Insurance
Covers damages you accidentally cause to others or their property in daily life (e.g. injuring someone, breaking something).
Who needs it: Highly recommended for everyone, especially those with children or pets
Annual cost: 50–150 zł/year (often bundled with home insurance)
Very cheap and valuable. Often included as a rider in home insurance packages at minimal extra cost.
Travel Insurance
Covers medical costs, evacuation, baggage loss, and trip cancellation when travelling outside Poland
Who needs it: Anyone travelling abroad, including short EU trips (EHIC does not cover all costs)
Annual cost: 150–400 zł/year (annual multi-trip). 20–80 zł per trip.
EU EHIC provides only basic public healthcare coverage — travel insurance adds evacuation, non-emergency care abroad, and personal liability. Annual multi-trip policies are good value for frequent travellers.
Life Insurance
Lump sum or income replacement for dependants in case of death or critical illness
Who needs it: Parents, mortgage holders, primary earners with dependants
Annual cost: 500–3,000 zł/year depending on cover and age
Term life insurance (na życie na czas określony) is simplest and cheapest. Often bundled with mortgage (required by bank). Group life insurance through employer is usually cheaper.
Income Protection / Sick Pay Top-Up
Additional sickness benefit above ZUS zasiłek chorobowy (80% of salary base)
Who needs it: Self-employed, freelancers, and those whose full salary is essential during illness
Annual cost: 300–1,200 zł/year
Public ZUS sickness benefit (chorobowe) pays 80% of assessment base from day 34 of illness. Self-employed who pay voluntary chorobowe ZUS contribution get this benefit.
Dog/Pet Insurance
Covers vet fees for illness, injury, and surgery for dogs, cats, and other pets
Who needs it: Pet owners — particularly dog owners
Annual cost: 200–800 zł/year
Pet insurance is less developed in Poland than in UK/Germany but growing. Vet costs in Poland are much lower than W. Europe so less urgently needed, but provides peace of mind for major procedures.
Comparison sites
Bundle home and personal liability insurance — often cheaper as one policy.
OC (car liability) is mandatory — drive without it and you face a fine from UFG (Ubezpieczeniowy Fundusz Gwarancyjny) of several thousand zlotys.
Health subscription plan (LUX MED/Medicover) is more cost-effective than traditional health insurance for most expats in Poland.
Bring your no-claims history from your home country insurer — Polish insurers may recognise it for OC/AC.
Check if your employer offers group insurance (życie grupowe, OC grupowe) — usually better rates than individual market.
