🏛️ Social Contributions
Basic state pension contribution. Split equally between employee and employer. Capped at 30× average monthly salary (PLN 282,600/year in 2026 — updated annually).
Disability insurance. Employee pays 1.5%, employer pays 6.5% of gross salary.
Sickness insurance. Paid exclusively by employee. Entitles to zasiłek chorobowy (sickness benefit) from day 34 of illness.
Accident insurance. Paid entirely by employer. Rate varies by industry risk assessment (0.67%–3.33%). Average ~1.67%.
Employer-only contribution funding unemployment benefits and employment programmes.
Health contribution paid to NFZ. 9% of assessment base (approximately gross minus ZUS social contributions). For employees with gross income over 30,000 zł, health contribution is non-deductible from PIT (major change from Polski Ład 2022).
🛒 VAT Rates
Poland also has a 0% rate for exports, intra-EU supply, and some agricultural goods. The 'zwolnienie podmiotowe' (small business VAT exemption) applies to businesses with turnover under 200,000 zł/year.

Poland introduced the 'Ulga dla powracających' (Return relief) from 2022 — 4-year PIT exemption on income up to 85,528 zł/year for Polish citizens or their family members returning after 3+ years abroad. Also 'Ulga dla rodzin 4+' (4+ children relief) exempts income up to 85,528 zł for parents with 4 or more children. Young workers under 26 are exempt from PIT on employment/civil law income up to 85,528 zł/year.
📋 Double Tax Treaties
Poland has double tax treaties with over 90 countries including all EU member states, USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan, and most other major economies. Treaty details determine which country has taxing rights on various income types. Tax residency in Poland means worldwide income is taxed in Poland (subject to treaty relief). Check the Ministry of Finance website for specific treaties.
