Poland (PL)
Poland is the largest country in Central Europe and a dynamic EU member state with one of the fastest-growing economies in Europe over the past two decades.
Leaving Poland
How to properly exit — protecting your finances, rights and records.
📅 General Timeline
3 months before: give rental notice, start job handover, notify utilities. 1–2 months before: file ZUS and CEIDG closure if self-employed, notify bank and insurance. Final month: update tax address at Urząd Skarbowy, transfer bank funds, return car registration if applicable, cancel subscriptions. Final week: wymeldowanie, return keys, take final utility readings, ensure no outstanding obligations. After leaving: file final tax return by April 30, monitor Polish bank for refunds, update home-country tax authorities of new residence.
Deregistration
When leaving Poland permanently, you should: (1) Wymeldowanie — deregister your address at the Urząd Gminy/Dzielnicy where you are registered (wymeldowanie z pobytu stałego/tymczasowego). Can be done in person or by post. (2) Notify Urząd Skarbowy (tax office) of your change of tax residency — submit a change-of-address form and indicate your final date of Polish tax residency. Non-EU citizens with Karta Pobytu should also notify the Urząd Wojewódzki.
Tax clearance
File your final Polish PIT return for the year of departure by April 30 of the following year. Declare all Polish-source income earned in the year of departure. If you leave mid-year, you may be a Polish tax resident for part of the year (183-day rule applies). Obtain clearance from your Urząd Skarbowy if you have outstanding tax liabilities before leaving. Self-employed (JDG): close your CEIDG registration and file final tax returns, ZUS, and JPK reports.
Pension portability
ZUS pension contributions paid in Poland are counted toward your Polish state pension entitlement. EU citizens: contributions are portable within the EU (aggregation of contribution periods). Non-EU citizens: Poland has bilateral social security agreements with many countries (USA, Australia, Canada, Ukraine, etc.) — check if your home country has an agreement with Poland. If no agreement and you leave permanently, non-EU citizens generally cannot claim a refund of ZUS pension contributions — contributions remain and pension is payable at Polish retirement age from abroad. EU citizens' contributions are aggregated.
Health insurance
NFZ coverage ends on the date you stop making contributions (typically when employment ends or you close your JDG). Ensure you have alternative insurance before leaving. EHIC cards are issued by the country of residence — your Polish EHIC becomes invalid when you are no longer a Polish resident. Obtain travel/international health insurance for the transition period.
Bank account
You can keep your Polish bank account after leaving — most banks allow non-resident accounts. However, banks may require periodic confirmation of your status. Some banks will request account closure if you have no Polish tax number or address. Transfer remaining funds or set up international standing orders. Keep account for receiving final salary, tax refunds, or pension payments. Close accounts with fees you no longer need.
Utilities
Cancel or transfer utility contracts: electricity (PGE, Tauron, Energa, Enea), gas (PGNiG/Orlen Paliwa), internet, mobile. Give required notice (typically 30 days for telecom, 14 days for energy with some contracts). Take final meter readings. Ensure deposits are returned. Cancel direct debits and standing orders.
Rental contract
Standard notice period (wypowiedzenie umowy najmu): 1–3 months depending on contract type and duration. Umowa na czas nieokreślony (open-ended): typically 3 months notice. Fixed-term contract: check break clause (klauzula wypowiedzenia) — may require mutual agreement to exit early. Conduct final apartment inspection (protokół zdawczo-odbiorczy) with photos. Ensure deposit return within 30 days of leaving — landlord must provide itemised accounting of any deductions.
