Poland recognises foreign professional qualifications under EU law (for EU citizens and EEA) and under bilateral agreements or national procedures for third-country nationals. The process varies significantly by profession. Regulated professions (zawody regulowane) require formal recognition before practice. Academic degrees can be recognised for employment purposes through the NAWA equivalency process. The general principle: EU qualifications are presumed equivalent unless specific adaptation or test required.
Regulated Professions
Process: EU citizens: apply to the relevant professional self-regulatory body (samorząd zawodowy) in Poland. The body assesses whether your qualifications are substantially equivalent. For most regulated professions: comparability review, language test, possible aptitude test or adaptation period. Non-EU citizens: may additionally need a "nostryfikacja" (qualification confirmation) from a specific authority before applying to the professional body.
Authority: Each profession has its own chamber or regulatory body: Naczelna Rada Lekarska (doctors), Okręgowe Izby Lekarskie (regional medical councils), Okręgowe Izby Radców Prawnych (legal advisors), Polska Izba Inżynierów Budownictwa (construction engineers), etc. For general coordination: Ministerstwo Edukacji i Nauki (Ministry of Education) handles some cross-sector recognition.
Timeline: 1–12 months depending on profession and complexity. Medical professions: 3–6 months for EU doctors with complete documentation. Legal professions: may require passing Polish bar examination.
Cost: 200–1,000 zł for application fees to professional chambers. Translation and apostille costs: 300–1,000 zł. Language proficiency test: 150–400 zł. Total: typically 1,000–3,000 zł.
Academic Degrees
Authority: NAWA (Narodowa Agencja Wymiany Akademickiej — National Agency for Academic Exchange) at nawa.gov.pl. Also: individual universities for admission purposes.
Process: Automatic recognition within EU for academic degree purposes. For employment or specific professional purposes: NAWA issues an "oświadczenie o uznawalności" (equivalency statement) or employers may recognise directly. Non-EU degrees: nostryfikacja procedure at a Polish university or via NAWA certificate.
Equivalency service: NAWA (nawa.gov.pl) — issues Individual Recognition Statements (oświadczenie) free of charge via the SYRENA online system only (mandatory since October 2023). Statement issued in Polish as a digitally signed PDF. Confirms level of education and right to study in Poland. For degrees from countries not covered by bilateral recognition agreements: university-level nostryfikacja required (paid: 400–600 zł at the accepting Polish university).
Document Rules
Apostille: Documents from countries that are members of the Hague Convention must be apostilled. This includes: UK, USA, India, Australia, Canada, and most EU states. Request from the issuing country's competent authority. Poland is in the Hague Convention — documents from Poland going abroad also need apostille from MSZ (Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs).
Legalisation: For documents from countries NOT in the Hague Convention: full legalisation chain required — notarisation in home country, then Polish embassy/consulate authentication. Check the current list at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (gov.pl/web/dyplomacja).
Sworn translation: Tłumaczenie przysięgłe (sworn translation into Polish) is required for all foreign documents submitted to Polish authorities. Must be performed by a tłumacz przysięgły registered with the Ministry of Justice. Register at ms.gov.pl. Cost: 80–150 zł per standard page.

Typical Timelines
EU degrees for employment: 2–4 weeks (NAWA statement). University admission recognition: 1–2 months. Regulated profession recognition: 2–12 months depending on profession. Medical doctor full registration: 3–9 months from complete application.
Polish language proficiency is required for most patient-facing and regulated professions. Language requirement is assessed by professional chambers and typically requires Polish B2/C1 level with specific professional vocabulary. Some professions (IT, research, some engineering roles) can be practised with English only in international environments.
