Confirm your work permit is obtained before starting employment

All non-Belizean nationals must have a valid work permit before starting work. The employer applies at the Labour Department (labour.gov.bz). Processing takes 4–12 weeks. Starting work without a permit is an immigration offence for you and the employer.

Register a birth in Belize and notify your home-country embassy

Births in Belize must be registered at the Vital Statistics Unit within 14 days. Foreign parents must also register the birth with their home-country embassy to establish the child's nationality. Many countries have strict deadlines for birth registration abroad.

Confirm your entry permission and stamp validity

Obtain BAHA pet import permit before travel

To bring a pet into Belize, you must obtain an import permit from BAHA (baha.org.bz) before travel. Apply at least 4–6 weeks in advance. Pets also require a health certificate issued within 10 days of travel and valid rabies vaccination.

Register with the Social Security Board (SSB)

All employed persons in Belize must register with SSB and obtain a Social Security number and card. Your employer will typically initiate this, but you can register yourself at any SSB office. Registration is required before your first payroll deduction.

Register with the Income Tax Department

Anyone earning income in Belize (employment, self-employment, rental, or business income) must register with the Income Tax Department. Registration provides your Tax Identification Number (TIN) and is required before filing your first income tax return.

Birth certificates, marriage certificates, police clearances, and academic degrees are much easier to obtain before you leave your home country. These documents are required for immigration, banking, school enrollment, and professional registration in Belize.

Open a Belize bank account

A local BZD bank account is essential for paying rent, utilities, and local bills, and for receiving salary if employed. Bring a comprehensive document pack to your appointment. Account opening can take 1–3 business days for approval.

Get a local SIM card (Digi or Smart)

A Belizean phone number is needed for banking, landlords, employers, schools, and most local services. Digi (BTL) has the widest network coverage. Smart is competitive on data plans. Both are available at their respective retail stores and at the airport.

WhatsApp is the primary communication platform—essential from day one. Also set up: Google Maps (download offline Belize map), Facebook (for community groups), your bank's mobile app, and Digi/Smart account management app.

The Belize school year runs September–June. Public primary schools are free; registration requires birth certificate, vaccination record, and proof of address. Apply in July–August for September enrollment. International options: International School of Belize (isbelize.com).

Hurricane season runs June–November. Property insurance with hurricane (wind and storm surge) coverage should be purchased before June each year. Coverage can become unavailable once a hurricane watch is issued.
