How to properly exit — protecting your finances, rights and records.
📅 General Timeline
Start departure preparations at least 8–12 weeks before your planned departure date: 8–12 weeks — notify employer, begin tax clearance, start QRP/permit cancellations; 6–8 weeks — give notice to landlord and utilities, arrange shipping or sale of vehicles; 4 weeks — cancel or transfer insurance policies, cancel utilities and telecom; 2 weeks — final tax filings, close or transition bank accounts, collect deposit refund; 1 week — final meter readings, return rental keys, collect all official documents.
Deregistration
There is no formal deregistration requirement for most foreign residents leaving Belize. However, if you hold a work permit, the employer should notify the Labour Department that employment has ended. QRP holders should formally cancel their QRP programme membership with the Belize Tourism Board (belizetourism.org) to stop the annual fee obligation. Permanent residents should notify the Immigration Department if they are surrendering permanent resident status.
Tax clearance
If you have been conducting business, self-employment, or have taxable income in Belize, obtain a tax clearance certificate from the Income Tax Department (tax.gov.bz; Tel: +501 822-2173) before departure. File any outstanding income tax returns for the final year of residence. The Belize tax year is the calendar year; final returns are due by 31 March for the prior year. Cancel any GST registration if applicable.
Pension portability
Social Security Board (SSB) contributions made in Belize remain in your SSB account. You do not receive a lump-sum refund of SSB contributions when leaving Belize. If you have met the minimum contribution requirements (10+ years), you may be eligible for an SSB pension at retirement age (currently 65) even as a non-resident. Contact SSB (socialsecurity.org.bz; Tel: +501 227-7163) to confirm your contribution record and options before leaving.
Health insurance
Cancel your local health insurance policy with appropriate notice (typically 30 days). Obtain a letter confirming the cancellation and any refund due for unused premium. Obtain medical records and copies of prescriptions from your Belizean doctors before leaving. Arrange continuation of health insurance for your destination country immediately.
Bank account
You may keep your Belize bank account open after leaving the country for ongoing property management or remote income purposes. Alternatively, close your account in person at the branch, request a closing balance letter, and have any remaining funds wire-transferred to your new account. Settlement of any outstanding loans or credit lines must happen before account closure. Note that inactive accounts may be subject to dormancy fees after 12–24 months.
Utilities
Give notice to Belize Electricity Ltd (BEL; bel.com.bz) at least 2 weeks before your departure date to arrange a final meter reading and billing. Do the same for the Belize Water and Sewerage Authority and your internet/mobile provider. Ensure all outstanding bills are paid; request final account statements for your records. For propane/LPG: arrange cylinder collection or transfer with your supplier.
Rental contract
Give notice to your landlord as specified in your lease agreement (typically 1 month). Request a move-out inspection with the landlord present and document the property condition in photos and video. Obtain your security deposit refund (typically BZ$1,000–4,000 for a 2-bedroom) within the timeframe specified in your lease. Get written confirmation that any claims against your deposit have been settled.
