Key Documents Checklist
Gather these before and after moving to Belize.
Valid passport required for all immigration, banking, government, and legal processes. Should have at least 6 months validity beyond your planned departure date and at least 2 blank pages for stamps.
Required for immigration applications, marriage registration, school enrollment, and citizenship/naturalisation. Obtain certified copies from your home country before departure.
Required if applying for spousal visa or QRP extension, or for name-change processes. Get a certified copy from your home country.
Required if remarried or if prior marital status is relevant to immigration, estate, or family matters in Belize.
Required for permanent residency and naturalisation applications. Must be from your home country and any other countries where you have lived for 12+ months in the past 5 years. Must be recent (within 6 months of application).
Issued by a licensed Belizean physician. Required for permanent residency and QRP applications. Must be dated within 6 months of submission.
Required for QRP programme (showing USD 2,000+/month income), permanent residency (showing financial self-sufficiency), and bank account opening. Provide 3–6 months of statements.
For QRP applicants: a letter from a pension provider, annuity company, or other income source confirming at least USD 2,000/month of qualifying income.
Issued by the Labour Department (labour.gov.bz) upon employer application. Required before starting any employment in Belize. Keep a copy with you at all times when working.
Required for bank account opening and various government applications. Accepted documents: utility bill (electricity, water, internet) in your name, or a lease agreement. Must show your full Belize address.
Required for professional licensing (medical, legal, teaching) and some work permit categories. Foreign degrees require apostille and may need review by the relevant Belizean professional body.
Required for all registered vehicles. Vehicle registration is managed through the Transport Licensing Unit (TLU). New arrivals importing a vehicle must clear customs and register with TLU.
For pets being imported into Belize: a health certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian within 10 days of travel, confirming rabies vaccination (valid certificate) and general health. Permit required from BAHA (baha.org.bz; Tel: +501 278-0006).
Not required upon entry but strongly recommended for any property owner or long-term resident in Belize. Belize wills are executed before a licensed Belizean attorney. Foreign wills may need to be resealed by the Supreme Court of Belize for local enforcement.
📜 What is an Apostille?
An apostille is an official certification that validates a document for international use. It is issued by a designated authority in the country where the document was issued (usually a court or government office). Required for documents from Hague Convention member states.
🌍 Certified Translations
Certified translations must be done by a sworn/authorised translator. In Belize, only translations by officially registered translators are accepted by government offices. Keep originals — they may be returned after verification.
