Retirement & Pension in Belize
State pension, contribution refunds, private pension vehicles, and international agreements.
Belize's retirement landscape for foreign nationals centres on two main elements: the Social Security Board (SSB) system for those who have worked in Belize, and the Qualified Retired Person (QRP) programme for foreign retirees bringing pension income from abroad. Most long-term expat retirees in Belize rely on their home-country pension, private savings, and investment income rather than a Belizean state pension. The QRP programme offers significant tax and duty advantages for qualifying retirees aged 45+ with USD 2,000+/month in qualifying income. Four questions every expat in Belize should answer: (1) Are you eligible for SSB contributions — i.e. do you have a Belizean employment contract? (2) Do you have 500+ SSB qualifying contributions for a future pension or will you fall short? (3) Does your home-country pension qualify for QRP status, removing Belizean income tax on foreign income? (4) Is your private medical and evacuation cover adequate — Belize has limited public tertiary healthcare.
State Pension
The Belize Social Security Board (SSB; socialsecurity.org.bz) administers the national social insurance scheme. Both employees and employers contribute weekly amounts based on tiered insurable earnings brackets — the system uses fixed weekly contribution amounts per bracket rather than a single flat percentage. For example: for weekly insurable earnings of BZD 350, the employee contribution is approximately BZD 9.10 and the employer contribution approximately BZD 17.90, totalling BZD 27.00. The total combined contribution rate across all brackets approximates 10–12% of insurable earnings. Upon reaching retirement age with sufficient qualifying contributions, SSB pays a weekly retirement benefit calculated on average insurable earnings and years of contributions. Contributions are compulsory for all employees aged 14–65 working in Belize, including foreign nationals on Belizean payroll.
Standard SSB retirement: age 65 — pension is payable regardless of employment status. Early access (reduced pension): ages 60–64 — the retirement pension is accessible from age 60 if the claimant is no longer employed, provided they have at least 500 qualifying weekly contributions. Workers who reach 65 receive the standard pension whether they are still employed or not.
At least 500 qualifying weekly SSB contributions (approximately 10 years of full-time covered employment) for the standard retirement pension. Workers with fewer than 500 contributions but more than the minimum short-term threshold may qualify for a reduced benefit. Contact the Social Security Board (socialsecurity.org.bz; Tel: +501 227-7163) to request a personal contributions statement and confirm your exact count. Contributions paid while outside Belize do not count — only weeks of Belizean registered employment.
Request a contributions statement directly from the SSB (socialsecurity.org.bz). Your retirement benefit is calculated on your average weekly insurable earnings and total qualified contribution weeks. SSB staff can provide an informal benefit estimate at any regional office. Note: Belizean SSB pensions are modest by North American or European standards. A worker with 500 qualifying contributions at average Belizean wages receives approximately BZD 180–350/week — most expat retirees rely primarily on home-country pensions and personal savings.
SSB pensions can be received abroad. Before permanently leaving Belize, notify SSB in writing of your new foreign address and provide international bank account details for payment transfer. SSB may require periodic proof-of-life documentation. The pension amount will be in Belizean dollars (BZD) — keep in mind the BZD is pegged to the USD at BZD 2.00 = USD 1.00, so USD purchasing power is stable but the absolute amounts are modest compared to Western pensions.
Pension Contribution Refund on Leaving Belize
There is no lump-sum contribution refund system for SSB contributions in Belize. Unlike some countries, employees who leave Belize — even permanently — do not receive their SSB contributions back as a cash refund. This applies to all contributors regardless of nationality.
All contributors — there is no contribution refund mechanism in the Belizean SSB system for any category of worker.
Not applicable — no refund scheme exists.
Nothing — SSB contributions are not refundable on departure from Belize under any circumstances.
Not applicable. However: if you have 500+ qualifying contributions, your SSB pension rights are preserved and claimable from age 60 (if not employed) or 65 regardless of where you live. Notify SSB of your departure and foreign address to protect future payment.
Your SSB contributions create a future pension right, not a savings account. If you have 500+ qualifying contributions, you will be eligible for an SSB pension at age 60–65 even as a non-resident — this is valuable even if small. Contact SSB before leaving Belize to register a non-Belizean address for future pension payment correspondence and to confirm your contributions record is accurate.
International Totalization Agreements
Belize has no totalization or social security reciprocity agreement with the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, or any EU country as of 2026. This means: (1) SSB contribution weeks in Belize cannot be combined with US Social Security, Canadian CPP, or UK National Insurance qualifying years. (2) Years working in Belize do not count toward home-country state pension entitlements. (3) There is no mechanism to transfer SSB credits to a foreign pension system. Check with SSB (socialsecurity.org.bz) and your home country's social security authority periodically — Belize may enter into agreements in future years. For most expats, Belizean SSB and home-country pension contributions run completely in parallel with no interaction.
Private Pension Vehicles
Home-Country Pension (Foreign Pension / Annuity)
Foreign Pension / AnnuityExpat retirees and QRP holders bringing qualifying pension income from their home country to Belize. This is the primary retirement income vehicle for the majority of foreign retirees in Belize.
None from Belize (home-country rules apply). Belize provides a significant indirect benefit via the QRP programme: QRP holders are fully exempt from Belizean income tax on all foreign-source income.
QRP holders are exempt from Belizean income tax on foreign-source income — including pension, investment income, annuity, rental income from abroad, and other qualifying income. Standard Belizean income tax (first BZD 26,000 tax-free, 25% above) applies only to Belize-source income, which most retirees do not generate.
Not applicable — the pension is from your home country. The QRP qualification requires a minimum of USD 2,000/month in qualifying income.
Fully portable — your home-country pension is paid to you wherever you live in the world, including Belize.
The QRP programme (administered by the Belize Tourism Board — belizetourism.org) is specifically designed for foreign retirees bringing qualifying pension or passive income of USD 2,000+/month to Belize. Benefits include: income tax exemption on foreign income, import duty exemption on personal household effects and vehicle (one-time), and expedited residency processing. Age minimum: 45 years. Application through a licensed Belizean attorney is strongly recommended.
International Private Pension / Investment Portfolio
International Pension / Investment AccountExpats with accumulated pension savings in home-country schemes who want to consolidate, manage, or grow their retirement savings while resident in Belize. Also relevant for pre-retirees building a retirement fund before or during Belize residence.
None from Belize.
Foreign-source investment and pension income is not taxed in Belize for QRP holders. For standard residents: foreign-source income is generally not taxed under Belize's territorial tax system — consult a Belizean tax adviser for your specific situation.
Determined by home-country scheme rules. No Belizean limit.
Highly portable — held in home-country or international financial institutions. Can be managed online from Belize.
UK expats: SIPP and ISA. US citizens: Roth IRA, traditional IRA, and 401(k) rollover IRA — US citizens remain subject to US worldwide taxation regardless of Belize residence; FBAR and FATCA obligations continue. Belize does not have a domestic private pension fund market of any significance — there are no Belizean private pension funds or voluntary pension savings products available locally. Be cautious of aggressive offshore pension scheme promotions in the Belize expat community — verify credentials and regulatory status of any offshore pension provider. Recommended platforms for international investment from Belize: Interactive Brokers International, Charles Schwab International (US citizens), or home-country brokerage accounts.
Early Retirement Options
Within the Belizean SSB system: the retirement pension is accessible from age 60 (rather than 65) for workers who have 500+ qualifying contributions and are no longer employed. The benefit amount at age 60–64 may be proportionally lower than at 65 — confirm the calculation with SSB. For expat retirees from abroad: the QRP programme is available from age 45 with no maximum age, making Belize accessible for early retirees who have qualifying pension or passive income of USD 2,000+/month from their home country. Many North Americans and Europeans in their late 40s or 50s who have achieved financial independence or receive an early pension use the QRP as their pathway to Belize residency without waiting until traditional retirement age.
Pension Gap Warning
Many expats arrive in Belize having accumulated significant home-country pension entitlements, but underestimate Belize-specific expenses that are not present in their home country: hurricane insurance (USD 2,000–5,000+/year for a house), private medical and hospital cover (USD 1,500–4,000/year for comprehensive cover), medical evacuation insurance (essential — USD 300–600/year), private dental care, and regular return flights to the USA/UK/Canada for advanced medical treatment or family visits (USD 1,000–3,000/year round-trips). The QRP income requirement of USD 2,000/month (USD 24,000/year) is an absolute minimum — a comfortable lifestyle in coastal Belize (Ambergris Caye, Placencia) typically requires USD 3,500–6,000+/month for a couple. Budget for healthcare cost increases as you age — private medical cover premiums for a couple at 70 may be 2–3× the premium at 50. The Belizean public health system is adequate for routine care but not for complex or emergency treatment.
