Maternity, parental leave and child benefits in Belize.
Family rights in Belize are governed primarily by the Labour Act (Chapter 297), the Families and Children Act, and the Social Security Act. Maternity leave and SSB maternity benefit are the primary statutory family entitlements for employees. Belizean family law is based on English common law tradition. The Social Security Board (SSB; socialsecurity.org.bz; Tel: +501 227-7163) administers maternity, sickness, and other benefits for qualifying contributors.
Maternity Leave
Before birth: 6 weeks before the expected date of delivery (Labour Act Chapter 297)
After birth: 8 weeks after delivery (total 14 weeks)
Job protection: The Labour Act protects employees from dismissal on grounds of pregnancy or maternity leave. Dismissal during maternity leave is unlawful. An employee returning from maternity leave is entitled to return to the same or equivalent position.
Paternity / Parental Leave
Max duration: No statutory paternity leave exists in Belize as of 2026. Some employers offer 3–5 days informally. Negotiate paternity leave explicitly in your employment contract.
Split rules / Elterngeld: No statutory shared parental leave framework exists in Belize. Any parental leave arrangements beyond the statutory maternity entitlement must be agreed with the employer.
Benefits
SSB Maternity Allowance
Approximately 80% of average insurable weekly earnings. Minimum: BZD 44/week. Maximum: BZD 384/week. Paid for the 14-week maternity period as a weekly allowance.
Duration: 14 weeks (7 weeks pre-natal + 7 weeks post-natal, though may be distributed differently if delivery is early/late)
Eligibility: The mother must have made at least 50 qualifying SSB contributions in total, with at least 25 paid contributions in the 39 weeks immediately before the expected delivery date. Both employed and self-employed SSB contributors qualify.
How to apply: Apply to the Social Security Board at any SSB office (Belize City: +501 227-7163; socialsecurity.org.bz) with: completed maternity benefit claim form, medical certificate confirming pregnancy and expected delivery date, and your SSB card/registration number. Apply at least 6–8 weeks before the expected delivery date.
The SSB pays the allowance directly to the claimant — it is not channelled through the employer. BZD 384/week maximum ≈ approximately USD 190/week. The allowance supplements employer pay — check your employment contract for whether the employer tops up to full salary during maternity leave.
SSB Maternity Grant
One-time grant on birth of a child (amount set by SSB — verify current amount at socialsecurity.org.bz as rates are reviewed periodically)
Duration: One-time payment
Eligibility: SSB contributors meeting the qualifying contribution requirements at the time of delivery.
How to apply: Claim simultaneously with the Maternity Allowance application at any SSB office. Bring: birth certificate (after delivery), SSB card, and ID.
The Maternity Grant is in addition to the weekly Maternity Allowance. Claim within the SSB deadline after delivery.
SSB Death / Survivor Benefit
Lump sum funeral grant plus ongoing survivor pension for qualifying dependants. Amount depends on contribution history.
Duration: Funeral grant: one-time payment. Survivor pension: ongoing for eligible dependants.
Eligibility: Available to survivors of deceased SSB contributors with sufficient contribution history.
How to apply: Contact SSB office (socialsecurity.org.bz; Tel: +501 227-7163) within 12 months of death with death certificate and contribution records.
Sick child leave
No statutory paid sick child leave exists in Belize beyond the employee's own 14-day annual sick leave entitlement. Some employers allow carers to use their own sick leave for a sick child by agreement. Negotiate explicit sick child leave in your employment contract.
Birth registration
Births in Belize must be registered within 14 days at the Vital Statistics Unit (vitalstatistics.gov.bz) of the nearest district. Parents must present: hospital or midwife birth notification, parents' passports or national IDs. A Belizean birth certificate is issued. Foreign parents must also register the birth with their home-country embassy to establish their child's foreign nationality and passport. Contact your embassy promptly—most countries have strict deadlines for birth registration abroad.
Childcare rights
No universal public childcare subsidy system exists in Belize. Private day care and nursery schools charge BZ$400–900/month. Government infant schools (ages 3–5) are subsidised but not fully free. The Families and Children Act protects children from abuse and neglect; Child Protection Services operates under the Ministry of Human Development.
