Banking in Croatia

Recommended banks, payment culture and credit score basics.

Croatia's banking sector is well-developed and EU-compliant. Following euro adoption in January 2023, Croatian banks operate within the Eurozone framework. The sector is dominated by subsidiary banks of major European groups: Erste Bank, Zaba (Zagrebačka banka — part of UniCredit), Privredna banka Zagreb (PBZ — part of Intesa Sanpaolo), and OTP Bank (Hungarian group). Online banking and mobile apps are well-developed. Opening a bank account requires an OIB — make this your first priority. Account-opening timelines: 1–5 business days for most banks.

Payment culture

Since euro adoption in January 2023, Croatia is fully integrated into the SEPA payment area. Contactless card payments (beskontaktno) are standard and widely accepted in Zagreb, Split, and tourist areas. Visa and Mastercard are universal. American Express accepted at upscale establishments. Cash remains important in rural areas, smaller markets, and traditional establishments — always carry some cash on the islands. Mobile payments via banking apps growing. Google Pay and Apple Pay supported by major Croatian banks. Cheques are essentially defunct.

Cash access

ATMs (bankomati) are widely distributed in Zagreb, Split, Rijeka, and tourist areas. Island ATMs exist on larger islands but can have limited availability — carry cash when visiting smaller islands. ATM withdrawal fees with Croatian bank cards: usually €0 at own bank ATMs; €1–2 at other bank ATMs. Foreign card fees: varies by your home bank. ATMs dispense EUR since January 2023.

HROK (Hrvatski registar obveza po kreditima)

Check your credit record through HROK — the Croatian Credit Bureau managed by HNB (Hrvatska narodna banka). Request your credit report at hrok.hr or through FINA. You are entitled to one free report per year.

Free annual check: One free credit report per year from HROK

Croatian credit scoring is less developed than in UK or USA systems. Banks assess creditworthiness primarily through income documentation, employment stability, and HROK credit record. Building a Croatian credit history takes time — start with a basic account and debit card. Mortgage applications require at least 2 years of steady income documentation. The FINA (Financijska agencija) system also holds records of payment defaults.

International transfers

SEPA transfers (to/from EU countries) are free or very low-cost from Croatian banks — usually same or next business day. International SWIFT transfers (outside EU): €5–25 fee per transfer at Croatian banks. Wise is significantly cheaper for international transfers — typically 0.5–1.5% fee. Revolut Premium also offers free international transfers up to monthly limits. For regular international transfers (salary from abroad, remittances), set up Wise or Revolut rather than paying Croatian bank SWIFT fees.
