Croatia (HR)
Croatia is a scenic Adriatic nation at the crossroads of Central and Southern Europe, celebrated for its over 1,200 islands and islets, medieval walled cities, eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites, crystal-clear waters of the Dalmatian coast, and rich Habsburg-era architecture.
Leaving Croatia
How to properly exit — protecting your finances, rights and records.
📅 General Timeline
3–6 months before departure: give rental notice, start job/permit wrap-up, plan pension and healthcare transition. 2–3 months before: cancel utility contracts, organise final tax filing, transfer or close bank accounts. 1 month before: deregister at MUP, formally notify Porezna uprava, collect all important documents (OIB confirmation, HZZO history, employment records, tax receipts). 2 weeks before: final utility meter readings, return keys with inspection protocol. After departure (within 30 days): file any final tax obligations, ensure all final bills paid, monitor Croatian bank account for last refunds.
Deregistration
Formally deregister your residence at MUP (Ministry of Interior) — submit a deregistration form (odjava boravišta) at your local MUP police station. EU citizens: deregister your EU residence certificate. Non-EU citizens: deregister your residence permit (this does not end your permit — it formally records your departure). Also notify your local municipality (grad/općina) and the Croatian Tax Authority (Porezna uprava) of your departure. Cancel your OIB registration status if leaving permanently — inform Porezna uprava.
Tax clearance
Notify the Porezna uprava (Croatian Tax Administration) of your departure date. File a final annual income tax declaration (godišnja porezna prijava / JOPPD form) covering the year up to your departure date, or the following February if remaining through year-end. Ensure no outstanding Croatian tax obligations — check at ePorezna portal. If you were PDV (VAT) registered: deregister for PDV. Self-employed persons: close or transfer your obrt or company properly. Obtain a tax clearance certificate (potvrda o nepostojanju poreznog duga) from Porezna uprava if required for your next country.
Pension portability
Croatian pension rights (I. and II. pillar) are portable within the EU under EU Regulation 883/2004 — contribution periods in Croatia and other EU countries are combined for determining eligibility. Non-EU citizens leaving Croatia: II. pillar (mandatory funded pension) contributions are transferable to the new country of residence under applicable agreements or can be left in the Croatian fund for future Croatian pension. I. pillar (state pension) rights remain in the Croatian system and will be paid at Croatian retirement age — you do not receive a refund of I. pillar contributions when leaving. Contact HZMO (mirovinsko.hr) for a pension statement before departure.
Health insurance
HZZO coverage ends when you deregister your Croatian residence and are no longer an employee or self-employed in Croatia. Notify HZZO of your departure. Cancel your dopunsko zdravstveno osiguranje (supplementary health insurance) — give notice per policy terms to avoid continued charges. Obtain a summary of your Croatian health record from your GP if useful for continuity of care.
Bank account
Decide whether to keep your Croatian bank account temporarily (for final salary, tax refunds, or return visits) or close it on departure. To close: visit your bank branch with your ID and bank card, or use online banking. Ensure all direct debits and standing orders are cancelled before closing. Withdraw or transfer remaining balance before closing. Keep the account open for a few months if you expect final tax refunds or salary payments. Revolut/Wise can serve as a transitional account for receiving residual Croatian payments after leaving.
Utilities
Cancel or transfer electricity (HEP), gas, and water accounts. Give minimum notice per your service contract (usually 15–30 days). Confirm final meter readings (odjava) and obtain final bills. Cancel internet, phone, and subscription services with appropriate notice period (typically 30 days for telecom). Cancel any Betalingsservice-equivalent standing orders through your bank.
Rental contract
Provide written notice of departure per your rental contract terms (typically 3 months for open-ended contracts). Arrange the final handover (primopredaja) inspection with your landlord. Photograph the property at departure to document its condition. Obtain your deposit back within 15 days. Ensure you deregister your address at MUP from this address. Cancel utility accounts or transfer them back to the landlord. Get written confirmation from the landlord of contract termination and deposit return.
