Denominations
Coins: 1c, 2c, 5c, 10c, 20c, 50c, €1, €2. Notes: €5, €10, €20, €50, €100, €200, €500. Croatian euro coins feature national motifs including the chequered coat of arms and a marten (kuna — the former currency animal).
Payment Culture
Croatia joined the Eurozone on 1 January 2023, replacing the Croatian kuna (HRK). Card payments are widely accepted in cities, hotels, and restaurants. Contactless payment (beskontaktno plaćanje) is standard. Cash remains important in rural areas, markets, and smaller establishments, particularly on islands. Mobile payments via m-banking apps are growing. Some older establishments and island markets still prefer cash.
ATM Tips
ATMs (bankomati) are widely available in cities, tourist resorts, and petrol stations. ATMs on smaller islands may be limited — stock up with cash before travelling to remote areas. Foreign cards work at most ATMs. Check for foreign transaction fees with your home bank. Avoid dynamic currency conversion (DCC) at ATMs — always choose to be charged in EUR.
Exchange Tips
As Croatia now uses the euro, currency exchange from other EU currencies is not needed. For non-EU visitors, exchange at banks or official exchange offices (mjenjačnica) — avoid hotel exchange desks. Wise and Revolut are popular for international transfers. Exchange rates at airports are typically unfavourable.
