Apply at local MUP (Ministry of Interior) police station. Processing time: 1–3 months. Croatia generally does not allow dual citizenship acquired through naturalization — applicants must renounce their previous nationality. However, Croatia ALLOWS dual citizenship for: Croatian diaspora descendants (children/grandchildren of Croatian emigrants), persons who would suffer significant hardship by renouncing, and in some bilateral agreement situations. Croatian citizens who acquire a foreign nationality do not automatically lose Croatian citizenship. Spouses of Croatian citizens: reduced residence requirement (3 years of marriage + 1 year of residence). Highly qualified non-EU workers holding EU Blue Card: 5 years required residence.

Foreign spouses of Croatian citizens who hold a Croatian permanent residence permit and have resided continuously and lawfully in Croatia for at least 1 year within the marriage may apply for citizenship — without the standard 8-year residence requirement, without the Croatian language test, and without renouncing their prior nationality.

Sham marriages are thoroughly investigated by authorities. Spouses from non-EU countries must have maintained valid legal residence in Croatia throughout.

Dual citizenship is not allowed — Croatia does not generally accept dual citizenship for persons acquiring Croatian citizenship through standard naturalisation — renunciation of previous nationality is typically required.
