Banking in Azerbaijan

Recommended banks, payment culture and credit score basics.

Azerbaijan's banking sector is functional and increasingly modern. The main banks operate extensive ATM and branch networks in Baku, with digital banking growing rapidly. The AZN (manat) is pegged to a USD/EUR basket and is not freely convertible in large amounts. Expats with a TRP and VÖEN can open full accounts. Card payments are common in Baku malls and restaurants but cash remains essential for markets, taxis, and regional travel. International transfers are possible via SWIFT but Wise/Revolut are more cost-effective.

Payment culture

Card payments (Visa and Mastercard) are widely accepted in Baku supermarkets, malls, restaurants, and hotels. Tap-to-pay (contactless) is increasingly common. Outside Baku — particularly at bazaars, local shops, small restaurants, and for transport — cash is essential. Always carry manat (₼). The M10 mobile wallet (m10.az) is increasingly used for local cashless payments and utility bills. PayPass/contactless is accepted at most Baku Metro machines via BakıKart.

Cash access

ATMs are plentiful throughout Baku and major cities. Kapital Bank and ABB ATMs are most widespread. Outside cities and in rural areas, ATMs are sparse — carry sufficient cash. ATM withdrawal limits: typically ₼500–1,500 per transaction. Avoid airport ATMs for best exchange rates. Most ATMs dispense AZN only; USD/EUR cash withdrawal machines are available at some Kapital Bank branches.

Azerbaijani Credit Bureau (Azərbaycan Kredit Bürosu)

Check your credit history at creditbureau.az or via your bank's portal. In-person request also possible at the Credit Bureau office in Baku.

Free annual check: Free credit report check available once per year at creditbureau.az.

Credit scores are less developed in Azerbaijan than in Western countries. Banks primarily assess creditworthiness via employment contract, salary certificate, and VÖEN history rather than a credit score model. Building a credit history in Azerbaijan takes time and requires local banking activity.

International transfers

SWIFT transfers available at all major banks but fees are high (₼20–80 per transfer + correspondent bank fees). For regular international transfers, use Wise (wise.com) or Revolut for significantly lower fees. Wise supports AZN → EUR/USD conversions. Western Union and MoneyGram have agent locations in Baku for informal remittances. Note: the AZN is not freely convertible above certain thresholds — large currency conversions may require documentation at the bank.
