Learning the Language in Azerbaijan
Courses, certifications, funding, and online resources to reach fluency.
Azerbaijani (Azərbaycan dili) is the official language of Azerbaijan. It is a Turkic language closely related to Turkish — Turkish speakers can achieve basic comprehension quickly. Russian is widely spoken in Baku, particularly among those aged 40+, and serves as a practical second language for expats. English is used in the oil & gas industry, diplomatic corps, and international business but is not widespread in daily life or government interactions. There is no state-mandated language course for foreign residents, but learning basic Azerbaijani will be rewarded with warmth and respect from locals.

Practical Tips
-
Azerbaijani shares 70-80% vocabulary with Turkish — if you speak Turkish, you will make very fast progress.
-
Russian is often more immediately useful in Baku's service sector and markets than Azerbaijani for those in older residential areas.
-
Learn key Azerbaijani phrases: Salam (hello), Çox sağ ol (thank you very much), Bağışlayın (excuse me/sorry), Neçəyədir? (how much?).
-
Most Azerbaijanis are genuinely delighted when foreigners make an effort with the language — even minimal Azerbaijani creates strong positive impressions.
-
Google Translate supports Azerbaijani and works reasonably well for short phrases — download the Azerbaijani pack for offline use.
-
Use the Azerbaijani Latin script (reformed 1991) rather than Cyrillic — the Cyrillic script is outdated and no longer official.
