Gibraltar (GI)
A unique British Overseas Territory at the tip of the Iberian Peninsula: English-speaking, tax-efficient (no VAT, no CGT, no inheritance tax), with a Mediterranean climate, 300 days of sunshine, and the world-famous Rock of Gibraltar.
Banking in Gibraltar
Recommended banks, payment culture and credit score basics.
Gibraltar has a well-developed banking sector regulated by the Gibraltar Financial Services Commission (GFSC). Major banks include Barclays, NatWest, Gibraltar International Bank (GIB), and Trusted Novus Bank (private banking, formerly Jyske Bank Gibraltar — sold and rebranded in 2020). The currency is the Gibraltar Pound (GIP), pegged 1:1 to GBP — UK pounds are accepted everywhere, but GIP is NOT accepted in the UK. Banking is entirely English-language and UK-standard in practice. Opening an account is straightforward for residents with employment documentation. Gibraltar is also a DLT/crypto hub with specialist fintech banking available.
Recommended banks
Barclays Bank (Gibraltar)
EnglishMonthly fee: £0 (basic current account); Premier accounts may have fees
Requirements: Valid passport, Gibraltar address proof (utility bill or rental agreement, <3 months old), employment contract or employer letter, source of funds declaration (for £10,000+), social insurance number. In-person visit required.
- + Largest and most established bank in Gibraltar
- + UK-standard digital banking and mobile app
- + Familiar brand for expats arriving from the UK
- + Full range of personal and business banking products
- + IBAN format: GI... (separate from UK GB...)
- - UK Barclays account does NOT automatically transfer — a new Gibraltar account must be opened in-person; no cross-border account continuation
- - KYC/AML checks can be thorough for crypto income, DLT sector earnings, or large fund inflows — Gibraltar's status as a crypto hub means banks apply enhanced due diligence
- - Limited ATM network outside town centre — Barclays ATMs concentrated in Main Street and Europort; coverage elsewhere in Gibraltar limited
- - Source-of-funds declarations required for significant deposits — large incoming transfers trigger additional compliance documentation; keep payslips and wire evidence ready
NatWest (Gibraltar)
EnglishMonthly fee: £0 (basic); Select/Reward accounts may have fees
Requirements: Same as Barclays: passport, Gibraltar address proof, employment evidence, social insurance number. In-person appointment required.
- + Strong presence in the professional and financial services community
- + Mortgage products available for Gibraltar property purchases
- + Reliable online banking platform
- + Good customer service for professional expats
- - Separate entity from NatWest UK — accounts opened locally in Gibraltar; existing UK NatWest accounts cannot be transferred or linked automatically
- - Not suitable for non-residents — requires proof of Gibraltar residency and employment; overseas applicants cannot open accounts remotely
- - Limited product range compared to UK NatWest — some investment, insurance, and lending products available in the UK are not offered through Gibraltar NatWest
- - International SWIFT fees: £20–35 per outbound transfer plus FX spread — Wise is significantly cheaper for regular transfers to Spain (EUR) or other currencies
Gibraltar International Bank (GIB)
EnglishMonthly fee: £0
Requirements: Passport, Gibraltar address proof, proof of employment or income. £100 opening deposit. In-person at main office.
- + Government-owned — stable and community-focused; backed by the Gibraltar government
- + Excellent local knowledge — GIB staff well-versed in Gibraltar-specific banking requirements
- + Good for Gibraltar residents with strong local roots — community banking model
- + Lower charges than Barclays or NatWest for some services
- - Less sophisticated digital banking platform than Barclays or NatWest — GIB app and internet banking less feature-rich; fewer self-service digital options
- - Fewer international services — limited international SWIFT capability compared to Barclays; not ideal for expats with frequent cross-border financial needs
- - Smaller branch and ATM footprint — GIB has a single main office; fewer ATM locations than Barclays or NatWest across Gibraltar
- - International SWIFT fees: £20–35 per outbound transfer — Wise is significantly cheaper for regular transfers to Spain or other EU/non-EU destinations
Wise
EnglishMonthly fee: £0 (account); small fees per transfer (typically 0.4–1.5%)
Requirements: Online registration only. ID verification via passport and selfie. No Gibraltar address required.
- + Best for GBP/EUR transfers between Gibraltar, Spain, and UK — significantly cheaper than bank SWIFT rates for cross-border transfers
- + Multi-currency accounts in GBP, EUR, USD, and 40+ currencies
- + Low FX fees — far cheaper than bank transfers for Spain spending or receiving foreign salary
- + Widely used by Gibraltar expats for cross-border daily expenses
- + No monthly fee; transparent pricing
- - Not a full bank — no overdraft, mortgage, or Gibraltar-specific financial products; cannot replace GIB or Barclays for property purchases or lending
- - UK challenger banks (Monzo, Starling) unavailable to Gibraltar residents — Wise is the main digital-only alternative available in Gibraltar
- - Not GFSC-regulated — Wise operates under FCA (UK) regulation, not Gibraltar's GFSC; deposits not covered by Gibraltar's deposit guarantee scheme
- - Not suitable for receiving GIP salary or Gibraltar-specific direct debits in all cases — some Gibraltar employers require a local bank account with a GI IBAN rather than Wise's non-GI IBAN
Trusted Novus Bank (formerly Jyske Bank Gibraltar)
EnglishMonthly fee: No monthly account fee; private banking relationship fees depend on assets under management (AUM)
Requirements: Passport, proof of Gibraltar residency and tax status, source-of-wealth documentation, minimum AUM typically £500,000+. Trusted Novus Bank (TNBank) is the rebranded successor to Jyske Bank Gibraltar — sold by Denmark's Jyske Bank in 2020 and now operating as an independent Gibraltar private bank under GFSC supervision.
- + Specialist private banking for Category 2 and Category 1 HNWI Gibraltar residents
- + Multi-currency accounts, investment management, and wealth structuring
- + Experienced in Gibraltar's tax and residency landscape
- + Gibraltar-regulated and independent — fully local ownership under GFSC supervision
- + Discretionary portfolio management and financial planning services
- - High minimum AUM of £500,000+ — not relevant for most salary-earning expats; exclusively for high-net-worth Category 2 and HNWI residents
- - Not a retail bank — no everyday current account for general use; cannot be used for daily banking, salary receipt, or routine transactions
- - Private banking relationship model, not branch banking — all services via relationship manager; no walk-in banking or standard ATM card for daily spending
- - Product fees based on AUM rather than transparent monthly charges — cost structure requires careful review against specific wealth management needs
Payment culture
Gibraltar is a highly cashless-friendly society. Contactless payments (Visa, Mastercard, Amex) are accepted in virtually all shops, restaurants, and services. Apple Pay and Google Pay work widely. Tap-to-pay limit is £100 (2026). Cash is still used, particularly at market stalls, smaller local shops, and for small purchases. GIP notes and GBP notes are both accepted everywhere. EUR is not widely accepted in Gibraltar shops (use in La Línea Spain instead). ATMs dispense GIP/GBP; some border-area ATMs dispense EUR.
Cash access
Good ATM coverage in Gibraltar town centre, Main Street, Europort, and near the Spain border. Barclays, NatWest, and GIB have ATMs throughout. Visa and Mastercard work in all ATMs. Gibraltar banks do not charge foreign card fees at ATMs. Most UK-issued Visa/Mastercard debit cards work fee-free at Gibraltar ATMs. EUR ATMs are available at some border-area machines. Withdraw GIP/GBP — always decline currency conversion prompts.
Gibraltar does not have a standalone credit reference agency
Gibraltar banks use UK credit reference agencies (Experian, Equifax, TransUnion) for credit checks on Gibraltar residents, particularly for mortgage applications. Your UK credit history is relevant and visible to Gibraltar lenders. Check your UK credit report via Experian, Equifax, or ClearScore before applying for a Gibraltar mortgage.
Free annual check: Access your UK credit report free: ClearScore (clearscore.com), Credit Karma, or Experian free tier. Checking your UK credit report is relevant for Gibraltar mortgage and credit applications.
If you are new to Gibraltar and have no UK credit history, establish it by maintaining a UK bank account with regular activity and paying UK credit products on time. For Category 2 HNWI residents: private banking relationships (Trusted Novus Bank and other Gibraltar private banks) focus on assets under management rather than traditional credit scoring.
International transfers
SWIFT/SEPA via Gibraltar bank accounts: 1–3 business days within EU; 2–5 days globally. Best options for expats: Wise for fast, cheap EUR/GBP transfers to Spain and UK — typically same day for GBP/EUR. Revolut: excellent for small/medium EUR-GBP transfers. Gibraltar IBAN format: GI followed by 22 characters (e.g., GI75NWBK000000007099453) — do NOT use UK (GB...) IBANs for Gibraltar accounts.
