English is the sole official language of Gibraltar and is universally spoken — there is effectively zero language barrier for English-speaking expats. All government services, businesses, schools, and hospitals operate in English. However, learning Spanish is enormously practical for daily life: the border with Spain is a 2-minute walk, most residents regularly cross to La Línea and beyond, and the wider Costa del Sol is nearby. Most Gibraltarians are fully bilingual. The unique local dialect Llanito (code-switching English-Spanish) is a point of intense cultural pride. The Gibraltar College of Further Education (GCFE) offers adult education courses including English language (ESOL/EFL) for non-native speakers and other languages. Spanish language courses may be available through the GCFE adult programme. The Instituto Cervantes Gibraltar (Spanish Government cultural institute) is the primary government-affiliated Spanish language provider.
