Gibraltar (GI)
A unique British Overseas Territory at the tip of the Iberian Peninsula: English-speaking, tax-efficient (no VAT, no CGT, no inheritance tax), with a Mediterranean climate, 300 days of sunshine, and the world-famous Rock of Gibraltar.
Leaving Gibraltar
How to properly exit — protecting your finances, rights and records.
📅 General Timeline
3 months before: give notice on flat and tenancy, arrange removal company. 2 months before: give notice on utilities, broadband/mobile. 1 month before: notify ITO of intended departure, apply for tax clearance letter, notify SIO, notify banks. Last week: final meter readings, keys to landlord, confirm SIO forwarding address for pension correspondence. Before leaving: confirm UK NI record with HMRC and decide on Class 2 voluntary contributions.
Deregistration
Gibraltar does not have a formal residential deregistration system. Notify the key authorities of your departure: Gibraltar Income Tax Office (ITO), Gibraltar Social Insurance Office (SIO), your employer (notice per employment contract — typically 1–3 months), and GIBTELECOM/Rock Networks for utilities.
Tax clearance
Before permanently leaving Gibraltar, obtain a tax clearance letter from the Gibraltar Income Tax Office (ITO). File your final income tax return (Form ITS100, due 30 November after the tax year ending 30 June). Pay any outstanding tax balance. Apply in writing to the ITO for a clearance letter stating your intended departure date and forwarding address. Processing: 4–8 weeks. No fee. ITO address: 1st Floor, St Jago's Stone Block, 331 Main Street, Gibraltar.
Pension portability
Gibraltar Old Age Pension rights are preserved after leaving — you do not lose your entitlement by departing, provided you have the required qualifying years (minimum 10 years; full pension 30 years). Pension is payable from age 65 to any address globally — notify the SIO of your forwarding address and foreign bank account details. Critical: UK National Insurance contributions and Gibraltar social insurance contributions count mutually under the UK-Gibraltar reciprocal agreement. Before leaving, confirm your combined UK + Gibraltar qualifying years with HMRC to protect your UK State Pension entitlement. Consider UK Class 2 voluntary NI contributions (£3.45/week, 2026) if you will continue working abroad.
Health insurance
GHA coverage is linked to social insurance employment contributions. Coverage ends when you stop working in Gibraltar. Notify the GHA of your departure and collect any outstanding prescriptions. Arrange health insurance in your destination country before departure. If moving back to the UK, confirm GHIC/NHS re-entitlement with NHSBSA.
Bank account
Gibraltar bank accounts (Barclays, NatWest, GIB) can generally be maintained from abroad — useful if you retain investments or property in Gibraltar. For Category 2 residents maintaining property: keeping a Gibraltar bank account is advisable. Notify your bank of your new address even if keeping the account open. For those with no remaining Gibraltar assets: closing the account before departure is administratively simpler.
Utilities
Cancel GIBTELECOM or Rock Networks broadband, mobile, and TV contracts — check notice periods (typically 1–3 months for fixed contracts). Close your GIBELEC (electricity) account and request a final meter reading. Cancel water account if separately billed. Read all meters on your last day and provide readings.
Rental contract
Typical Gibraltar tenancy notice period: 1–2 months written notice (as specified in your contract). Give notice in writing (email with read receipt). Conduct a check-out inspection with your landlord or agent on move-out day — photograph every room. Recover your deposit within the agreed return period (typically 30 days). Provide a forwarding address for post.
