Gibraltar (GI)
A unique British Overseas Territory at the tip of the Iberian Peninsula: English-speaking, tax-efficient (no VAT, no CGT, no inheritance tax), with a Mediterranean climate, 300 days of sunshine, and the world-famous Rock of Gibraltar.
Insurance Guide
Which insurances you actually need in Gibraltar, prioritised.
Insurance in Gibraltar is regulated by the Gibraltar Financial Services Commission (GFSC). Many major UK insurers operate in Gibraltar, and UK-style insurance products are widely available in English. The Gibraltar Health Authority (GHA) provides a public health system funded by social insurance contributions — employees are automatically covered. Private health insurance is available and widely used for faster access to specialists. Car insurance, contents insurance, and personal liability insurance are the key covers for most expats. Gibraltar's small size means limited local insurance competition — many residents use UK-based or Gibraltar-licensed international providers.
Legally Mandatory
- - Motor third-party liability insurance — legally required to drive any vehicle in Gibraltar
- - Employer's liability insurance — mandatory for all Gibraltar-registered employers
- - Professional indemnity insurance — required for regulated professions (financial services, legal, healthcare)
Motor Insurance
Third-party (minimum legal), third-party fire and theft, or comprehensive cover for vehicles registered in Gibraltar.
Who needs it: All vehicle owners — third-party is mandatory by law.
Annual cost: £400–1,200/year (comprehensive, depending on vehicle and driver profile)
Gibraltar vehicles can drive in Spain with UK/Gibraltar insurance (check your policy for Schengen/EU extension). Driving a right-hand drive UK car in Gibraltar and Spain is common and legal. UK "Green Card" proof is no longer required for EU travel post-Brexit, but confirm your insurer provides coverage for Spain.
Buildings Insurance
Structural insurance for the property itself — walls, roof, fixtures. Usually required by mortgage lenders.
Who needs it: Property owners with a mortgage; usually covered by the management company for flat complexes.
Annual cost: £300–800/year
For most Gibraltar flats (service-charge developments like Ocean Village, Kings Wharf), buildings insurance is included in the service charge via the management company. Confirm before purchasing separate cover. Individual houses and commercial properties need standalone buildings cover.
Health Insurance (Private)
Supplementary private health insurance for faster access to specialists, private hospital rooms, dental, optical, and specialist care beyond GHA public provision.
Who needs it: Expats who want private hospital rooms, faster consultant appointments, dental and optical cover beyond GHA entitlements. Self-employed and contractors not automatically on GHA payroll track.
Annual cost: £800–2,500/year (individual); £2,000–5,500 (family)
GHA covers employed residents for hospital treatment at St Bernard's Hospital. Private insurance is valued for dental, optical, specialist referral speed, and access to private hospitals in Spain (nearby La Línea or Marbella) or the UK via medical evacuation. Pre-existing conditions may be excluded or subject to loading.
Home Contents Insurance
Covers personal possessions, electronics, furniture, and valuables in your rented or owned Gibraltar property against theft, fire, water damage, and accidental damage.
Who needs it: All renters and owners with significant personal property.
Annual cost: £150–500/year depending on property value and contents
Gibraltar flats are generally compact but expensive — electronics, jewellery, and imported goods are significant assets worth insuring. Check if your rental contract requires contents insurance. Some Gibraltar landlords include basic buildings cover but not contents.
Travel Insurance
Covers medical emergencies, trip cancellation, baggage loss, and repatriation when travelling abroad from Gibraltar.
Who needs it: Everyone who travels outside Gibraltar — particularly important for travel to non-EU countries. Also covers trips to Spain, UK, and Europe.
Annual cost: £50–200/year (annual multi-trip policy)
UK GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card) covers emergency state healthcare in EU countries for Gibraltar residents who hold British nationality. It does NOT replace comprehensive travel insurance. Annual multi-trip policies are more economical for expats who travel regularly to the UK and Spain.
Life Insurance
Lump-sum or income replacement on death, for dependants and mortgage protection.
Who needs it: Anyone with dependants, a Gibraltar property mortgage, or a partner who relies on their income.
Annual cost: £200–800/year (term life; highly variable by age, health, and sum assured)
Gibraltar residents can access UK and international life insurance markets. Zurich International and Old Mutual offer portable policies suited to internationally mobile expats. For Category 2 residents with high-value estates, whole-of-life structures are worth considering from a Gibraltar estate planning perspective (no inheritance tax, but UK domicile rules may still apply).
Income Protection Insurance
Replaces part of your income if you cannot work due to illness or injury for an extended period, beyond the Gibraltar SIO sickness benefit.
Who needs it: Self-employed, freelancers, high earners for whom the state sickness benefit (£108.60/week) would be inadequate.
Annual cost: £480–1,500/year depending on income protected, deferral period, and occupation
Gibraltar state sickness benefit pays £108.60/week — far below most expat salary levels. Income protection insurance covering 50–70% of salary provides a meaningful safety net for long-term illness. Deferral periods of 13–52 weeks significantly reduce premiums.
Pet Insurance
Veterinary costs, liability for pets causing damage, and emergency treatment cover.
Who needs it: Pet owners — Gibraltar vets charge UK-level prices and specialist treatment can be expensive.
Annual cost: £200–600/year (dog); £150–350/year (cat)
Gibraltar is a small territory and local vet provision is limited — serious cases may require referral to vets in La Línea (Spain) or UK. Ensure your policy covers treatment in Spain as well as Gibraltar.
Comparison sites
UK comparison sites (MoneySuperMarket, Compare the Market) often exclude Gibraltar — always verify the insurer accepts a GX postcode before purchasing.
GHA covers employed residents for hospital treatment — private insurance is valuable primarily for speed, dental, optical, and specialist access.
For motor insurance, confirm whether your policy covers driving in Spain — essential for cross-border commuters and frequent Spanish shoppers.
Many Gibraltar flat developments include buildings insurance in the service charge — confirm before purchasing separately to avoid double-paying.
